Price Watch: PlayStation 4

Price Watch: PlayStation 4

The PlayStation 4 releases in New Zealand on Friday, along with a slew of new games, controllers, and other peripherals. In order to help you find the best place to purchase your new gaming gear, we're gathering together details on the prices published by the country's biggest retailers.

Unlike the Xbox One, however, stock of the actual PlayStation 4 console is expected to be scarce, with some outlets having sold out as long ago as July. In order to help as many readers as possible, we're expanding the usual "price watch" format to also encompass something we're calling "stock watch" - a list of retailers reported to have stock in hand.

The stock watch section will likely become more detailed after the console launches, so if you're keen to get a PS4 and can't find one, check this post often - even after the system releases on Friday. Similarly, if you notice a retailer in your area has consoles, let us know (or post a comment) so that other NZGamer.com readers know where to go looking.

As always, only New Zealand-based retailers were considered for inclusion.

Games

This section's a little different to the hardware lists above; here, launch games are shown along with the cheapest price and the retailer(s) where that price is available. Other retailers are not listed.

Midnight Launches

In this section, specific stores are listed under their chain; only the store (not the chain) is denoted as being open at midnight. Chains that don't typically open at midnight (i.e. The Warehouse, Noel Leeming) not listed unless they're known to be opening.

  • EB Games - Some stores opening, including:

Stock Watch

A list of stores known to have stock available for walk-in sales / late pre-orders / etc.

  • No stores are currently known to have stock
  • Trademe Auctions, pre-launch, are not allowed and are being withdrawn by that site's administrators.

Unsubstantiated Rumors

As with any desirable product that has a limited availability, rumors have already started to spring up around the PlayStation 4 and what's happening with stock. We've heard many, of course, and have decided to publish the more likely sounding rumors below. If you know for sure either way, please let us know (you don't need to go on the record, if you'd prefer to remain anonymous.)

  • Rumor: Sony intend to supply more stock than initially advised to retailers
Contacts within the industry are suggesting that more stock will be released to retailers than originally planned; as a result, some late pre-orders may yet be supplied this week.
  • Rumor: Killzone + Controller + PlayStation Eye Bundle Planned for December
There is some suggestion that Noel Leemings (at least) will be getting a special bundle SKU of the PlayStation 4 in late december (with the second batch of consoles landing in New Zealand.) Furthermore, this stock is said to be unallocated to pre-orders at this stage.

We called Noel Leeming to check, and they do indeed have this bundle in the system, however there is no stock listed which means they're not accepting pre-orders for it (i.e. it could just be a placeholder.) Noel Leeming also confirmed that they have "2,000" PlayStation 4 systems on backorder, and that the second shipment is sold out; the third is expected in "early" 2014 (no more specific information was available.)

NZGamer.com reader Timzone managed to pre-order a Killzone bundle (from an unspecified retailer), with an expected availability date of December 19th. The retailer had an allocation of 150 units, but on Saturday were down to 90 remaining.

No other retailers we spoke with had any information regarding a Killzone bundle.

Damn I was really hoping I'd be able to get one before Christmas but it is what it is I suppose. Does anyone know if the PS4 Vita Bundl will be coming to NZ? It's confirmed for Europe but I was wondering what territory we serve as an extension for.

Does anyone know if JB are supplied from Australia? Because so close to launch they are still TBC so they could have more stock than other places? I would have thought they would have said they are out of stock by now.

As much as I love Playstation I will still wait a while as I have far too many games yet unplayed and it will give Sony a chance to fix any bugs the systems may have, a few more months won't kill me.

Also worth checking wowhd and playasia as well. Right now playasia is the cheapest place to import PS4 and Xbox games (beating out NZGameshop by about $5-$10)

Crikey - it's pretty rare to hear play-asia being described as cheap. They're great, don't get me wrong, but they're also normally super expensive. Maybe this region free malarky is going to reap even more rewards this gen than expected...

We're an extension of Europe, technically, but that doesn't guarantee that everything they get, we'll get. I wouldn't hold your breath on that bundle until it's actually confirmed for here.

I just had a look now and they dont look as cheap as NZGameshop to me (which I have been using for a couple of years). Just ordered Tearaway from NZGameshop for $44. Playasia was a bit more expensive at $48.

Pre-orderd around August. Was put on the reserve list but then was promoted to a day one console just yesterday. Talked to the staff of JB-HIFI Welly and they said they got a whole bunch of extra stock in that they wearnt accounting for. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Also was told they only getting 15 camera's in, and that, that figure was considered plenty compared to other retailers.

Just ordered the Killzone bundle from Noel Leeming. Lady told me there were 150 nationwide and there are 32 remaining.

Full price is $819 and you get PS4, 2 controllers, camera and Killzone so big savings if you do the math.

Has anyone got an ETA for this bundle from Noel Leeming?

Mighty ape sold out of all their xbox ones. have to wonder how many JB and EB have left. Considering there were roughly 3 times the amount of xbox ones produced for launch than there was PS4's.

Dunedin JB-Hifi have about 15-20 XB1's on sale in store. Not sure if they had actual consoles inside but the box was freaking heavy to lift.

I spoke to JB in Wellington the day before the Xbox One released and the guy there said that day-one editions would be scarce, but stock of the normal console was "effectively unlimited", and unlikely to lead to shortages. It wasn't clear if he meant just there (where they sold ~250 day-one edition consoles) or wider, but the inference was clear to me; if you want an XO, you can walk into a store today and buy one.
