World's First Xbox One Being Guarded By Sharks

Microsoft have announced plans to submerge an Xbox One system in the shark tank at Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World in Auckland this morning. The system will then be the first Xbox One to be officially sold at retail when the next-gen console is released next week.

Update: Microsoft have this afternoon supplied a photo of the console being placed in the shark tank.

Exactly who will earn the right to claim the system hasn't been decided, according to Xbox New Zealand lead Steven Blackburn, but the company decided to release the console in this country first because of its "passionate gaming community."

The Xbox One releases in 13 countries on November 22nd; in New Zealand, the official launch is taking place in conjunction with the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, which will likely also serve as the place where the shark-guarded Xbox One will be presented to its new owner as part of this promotion.

Might also be something to do with NZ being the first country to see the coming day. But maybe I'm just cynical.

Nek Minnit:

"A horrible incident has occurred at Kelly Tarlton's this morning, when a bystander made his way into the shark tank to retrieve an xbox one console prior to it's release next week"

Also NZ hasn't been the first country to see the new day in since about two years ago when Samoa jumped the date/time line - they're now an hour ahead of us :D

MS have left themselves wide open for so many parodies with this one, like Sony doing an advertisement/promotion segment which includes a scene similar to the conclusion of one of the Jaws movies.

Truly awesome. If someone really was stupid/brave enough to jump into the tank for the console, they should get a console.... if they survive. lol

It would be hilarious if it got water damage... I can imagine the MS Customer Service people saying "Sorry but because the fault was caused by water damage you aren't covered under the warranty "

Poisonous snakes would not present a problem , miscrients would probably be looking for the ps4 , not a tasty snake dinner.

After bashing the "un-boxing" video's a terrible advertising, Microsoft decide to drown an Xbone.

Other than the surface of the sun, there is no environment worse for a plastic bodied electrical appliance than submerged under water. But they are setting the silliness at a record level.

Sony, your move. I recommend a woman gives birth to the first PS4 right infront of the lucky recipient.

Yeah, that ought to do it.

Funny if you got home all excited afterwards to find your new Xbox was water damaged...could one get insurance for it with it knowingly being put in water lol. Good gimmick but would be more fun to see someone go in and get it to claim it as their own.

So does the winner actually get to do some (supervised) diving with the sharks to retrieve it? Because that would be a pretty cool promotion, and they could post a video of the person retrieving it or something. If they just happen to get handed a dry Xbone that they're told has been under water guarded by sharks for a week, that's a bit lame. They may as well have just not bothered with the sharks and given them one off the shelf.

The Xbox (N)One was developed, tested, priced, marketed, remarketed and vetted by these selfsame sharks. That is the wherewithall of several generations of the american way of marketing/sales/customer satisfaction. No wonder every One(sic) was so happy :)

I don't see the point of doing this little promo other than this is the most secure place MS could find in Auckland with a display case to put the console in...
