At the 25th Anniversary celebrations for the Metal Gear franchise last night, Kojima Productions and Konami announced Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, a new and apparently open-world entry in the fan-favorite series.
The game is targeted at PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, however Kojima Productions made specific reference to next generation systems, stating that their "Fox" engine was capable of making next-gen games.
Some "key art" for the game, as released by Konami at the event
Ground Zeroes was described by Gamespot as showing possible open-world elements. "The military base itself felt expansive and huge," Gamespot explained, "Snake can summon a helicopter to bring him around as well as drive a jeep to go from point A to B."
Hideo Kojima, creator of the franchise, stated that he's keen to bring a new "spin" to the stealth genre, adding that, should you be discovered and your stealth broken, you can use "all the means and tools to escape", rather than facing a "game over" screen.
Specific details as to the breadth and scope of the game, as well as the targeted release date, were not included as part of this announcement.
