A 4chan user, posting anonymously, has stated that Doom 4 - id Software's next big game - has been cancelled (if you're not familiar with 4chan, we don't recommend visiting that link). What gives the poster creedence is that he also posted a large number of screenshots (you can see them here) that, looking remarkably id-ish, seem to support his claim.
But is it true? The publisher is emphatically stating the contrary: "DOOM 4 isn't cancelled," Bethesda's VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines told Joystiq. "When we're ready to talk about it and show it off, we'll let everyone know."
Today's rumour comes on the back of last month's layoffs at the company, which immediately followed the release of Rage. Rage sold around 2.4 Million units worldwide, across PS3 (0.94M), Xbox 360 (1.25M) and PC (0.24M).
Rumours regarding the future of the high-profile developer are nothing new; just last October, Kotaku posted a story stating that Doom 4 had been indefinitely postponed, as a result of the "disappointing" Rage launch. Pete Hines came out swinging in that case, too, although his precise wording ("no title under development at id has been postponed"), which failed to specifically name the shooter, stopped somewhat short of reassuring ardent Doom 4 fans.
What do you think? Will we see Doom 4 anytime soon? Let us know in the comments.
