Video Game Awards - The Winners

The closest thing that Videogames have to The Oscars is a set of awards called the VGAs (the Video Game Awards), hosted by an American Cable Television channel called Spike TV.

Originally aired in 2003, the awards have been picking up steam in the last few years particularly, with several notable announcements and unveilings that have taken place at the show helping to pick up ratings and prestige for the awards themselves.

The awards are voted on by an advisory council of some 25 journalists from different media outlets, including the Associated Press and... er... Playboy.

"Best Multiplayer
Winner: Portal 2
Runners up: Battlefield 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Gears of War 3"

Thought this was pretty interesting. The runners up are considered most of the biggest console multi-player games in the industry and Portal 2 takes it out. Nice.

Killzone 3 was even in the running? ffs. Should have been "Biggest Disappointment of the year".

Nice to see Portal 2 getting a whole lotta love though!!

I think the "Best Shooter" category refers to the shooter that made the most money :P

Skyrim cleaned up. From what I understand, there has been no game/developer to win both the game and studio of the year awards.

On another note, I dont see why there are two sports game awards - one for single and one for team sports - they should be combined. Also, I would love to see a 'Best Campaign Game', the opposite of the 'Best Multiplayer Game'.

I like how the best XBox game wasn't even an exclusive... Yet Best PS3 was and so were the runner-ups...

I don't agree with these awards at all, I mean, who the hell chooses them?

What remaining faith I had is now totally gone. Some very poor decisions in there, either money talks or the judges aren't impartial.

It was obvious Skyrim was gonna sweep up.
Just in terms of scale, it swamps everything else.

sh*tty. skyrim only appealed to hardcore gamers and was only really popular on pc and should have won that category. portal 2 is just a gimmick and a lot of the runner ups weren't even that great

I can't speak to Skyrim (I haven't played it) but Portal 2? You clearly haven't played it to dismiss it so; that game was amazing - if I was reviewing it, it would have gotten a 10. Loved every second of it.

I love Skyrim, loving every minute of it but I must admit Portal 2 deserved Game of The Year, it was just such a perfect game in every way. It required thought, looked awesome, had possibly the coolest villian of the year, (other than Cicero) and the Multiplayer definitely deserved its title.

I'm surprised Rayman Origins didn't even get any runners up spots at all, Considering all the great reviews it has. But I suppose there were just too many great games this year. It's the next game I want to get anyways. It will probably be the first side scrolling platformer I have bought for playstation since the ps1 days.

I have to wonder what extent a recent game bias affects these choices (I'm sure it's true of film awards and others too, though maybe less so). Skyrim is a game a lot of people are in the middle of now, and it has captured a lot of imaginations, but will it hold that adoration into the new year? Portal 2 did a lot of fascinating things (glad to see the voice actors getting credit here!), but it was a long time ago now, we've forgotten about the play experience.
