Videogame Stuff At Armageddon in Auckland

Armageddon, the pop culture expo that takes place at various locations throughout the country each year, has nearly rolled around once more to it's primary location: Auckland.

Taking place over the four day weekend of 28-31 October, this year's Auckland event is packed full of the usual movie / TV / sci-fi / anime stuff. It's also got more than its usual share of videogame content this time around - check out some of the highlights:

Activision Blizzard
The biggest publisher in the world is going big with a couple of titles this year:

Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure
An innovative game, it's multiplatform and each different version comes with it's own "portal of power" which lets you bring the special Skylanders toys into the game. Their stats (it's a light RPG with some character progression) are saved directly into the toy itself, which lets you take them 'round to your mates place, etc, where you can continue on with the exact same character / items as you had before.

We've had a play with it a couple of times now and we reckon the idea has got big potential - it's out next week but if you're not on board by the time Armageddon rolls around, pop down and see what all the fuss is about.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Not sure whether you're going to go for Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3? This is the perfect opportunity to find out which one floats your boat more because Activision are bringing the unreleased MW3 to Armageddon for you to get up close and personal with.

If you can only get one of the big-two shooters this year, this represents a great opportunity to arm yourself with the knowledge you need to make the big decision.

Five Eight
Five Eight are going to have a host of the games they distribute on display, including some of the most anticipated titles of the upcoming Christmas season. There's some overlap here but we're listing them out anyway so you can figure out for yourselves as to where you see what. Check 'em out:

• Assassins Creed: Revelations (weeks before it comes out!)

• Rayman Origins (weeks before it comes out!)

• House of the Dead: Overkill - Extended Cut (comes out on the Friday Armageddon itself starts)

• Mario & Sonic at the 2012 London Olympics (weeks before it comes out!)

• Sonic Generations (the week before it comes out!)

• Just Dance 3 (out next week)

• The Black Eyed Peas Experience (weeks before it comes out!)

Sony are putting up a host of new & unreleased games, including:

• Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One (the week after it comes out)

• Uncharted 3 (the weekend before it comes out!)

• Tekken Hybrid (ages before it comes out)

And the suggestion is that there's still more to come. There's also talk of prizes, etc, although we're not sure how this will play out.

Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. are going big with Batman: Arkham City, showing the game itself on the Warner Bros. stand in the main hall, where Kevin Conroy - the guy that voices Bats in the games - on hand to sign autographs!

If you've got a copy of the game, which releases the week before, bring it along and get him to sign it for maximum epeen extension amongst Bats fans.

Xbox 360
Microsoft are creating an R18 zone this year, which will include:

• Gears Of War 3 (out now)

• Halo Anniversary: Combat Evolved (weeks before it comes out!)

• The Gunstringer (out now)

• Battlefield 3 (released the day before Armageddon)

• Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (weeks before it comes out!)

• Batman: Arkham City (released the week before Armageddon)

• Assassins Creed: Revelations (weeks before it comes out!)

That's not it though (they must have a huge booth), because they also have a general admission area featuring a host of games that don't require any particular age to view:

• Kinect Sports (out now)

• Kinect Sports Season 2 (released the day before Armageddon)

• Dance Central 2 (released the week before Armageddon)

• The Gunstringer (yes, it's in both places)

• Fruit Ninja Kinect (out now)

Microsoft are also promising a Kinect stage, with various demonstrations, challenges and celebrity guests.

We will also be there, of course, with a host of cool content on display (we can't tell you exactly what, yet, but we're working on something special...). It's a great chance to pop by, meet the team, and ask us any questions you might have about the future of our community.

Keep an eye on the site for more news and information about the upcoming Armageddon as it comes to hand - if you have any questions for the organisers of the event or any of the companies who are putting things on show, let us know and we'll do our best to track down the answers for you.
