The Russian Ministry of Defence released an image on Twitter, supposedly showing US troops aiding ISIS fighters in Syria. As it turns out, it was actually a screenshot from a game called AC-130 Gunship Simulator.
Eliot Higgins – journalist and scholar at King’s College – made the discovery.
So here's the English version of the caption @mod_russia put on a video game screenshot "ISIS automobile convoy leaves Abu Kamal for Syrian-Iraqi border (November 9th, 2017)" https://t.co/8uv2vbEHeQ pic.twitter.com/Ye7hX5HplH— Eliot Higgins (@EliotHiggins) November 14, 2017
Higgins added that it was used alongside other images, to falsely link the US and Islamic State Fighters.
The image has been deleted from the Russian MOD’s Twitter page, but the country’s news outlets were quick to pick it up.
AC-130 Gunship Simulator is a mobile game, where players provide air support to troops during the Vietnam War.
