EA Cuts Star Wars Battlefront 2 Hero Unlock Costs Following Backlash

In response to criticisms, publisher EA and developer DICE have slashed the unlock cost for Star Wars Battlefront II’s heroes. The amount of credits required to unlock the top heroes – including Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader – will be reduced by 75-percent.

“Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader will now be available for 15,000 credits,” shared DICE’s executive producer John Waasilcyzk in a statement. “Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa for 10,000 credits; and Iden at 5,000 credits.”

“Based on what we’ve seen in the trial, this amount will make earning these heroes an achievement, but one that will be accessible for all players,” he added. “It's a big change, and it’s one we can make quickly. It will be live today, with an update that is getting loaded into the game.”

A comment from an EA representative regarding progression unlocks and microtransactions was slammed over the last 24 hours, becoming the most downvoted post in Reddit history.

Star Wars Battlefront II releases November 17 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. If you pre-ordered, early access starts tomorrow.

Luke/Vader still take 10 hours to unlock, or $65 USD via loot crates. More time than the campaign and cost more than the game.

So, the outrage should be the same, only the numbers need to be adjusted. Granted it's a big adjustment but that's just a testament to how horrendous things were to begin with! Still the same crappy system. Still costs a small fortune to buy the all the hero characters with real money. Still takes ages to unlock them through game play alone. Still the same issues, just the figures in the spreadsheet are different!

LOL I don't think they learned anything... just tried to shift the goalposts a little... (imagine how outrageous it would be if the costs were left as is!?)

Hopefully the outrage continues and they will just do a full 180 on the damn micro transaction thing...

One could say that EA planned this whole thing. 60k is totally unreasonable and they would've known that people would be outraged by it. By setting such a ridiculous first target, they are able to shift the target closer and keep their profits up from loot boxes, all while making it look like they are listening to the community and are good guy devs.

Yeah totally, it's the oldest sifty sales trick in the book.
What?!? 60,000 is outrageous!!
OK, OK you got me. Can't blame me for havin' a go. But I feel bad now. How about I make it up to you. I'll sell it to you AT… no… BELOW cost…… that's right, you heard me. Let's say…… 15,000…… Honestly I'm literally losing money on this! That's how bad I feel!
LOL I hope no one fools for it??

Haha, the ship is half sunk before the game even launches. I hope it tanks and the gaming industry frantically start arranging board meetings to get there project back on track with 2010’s game releases.

I read this afternoon the developers are getting death threats over the game. Anyone handling a Starwars franchise should know that their consumer base wear robes and practice ‘Jedi’ as a religion. People who commit that much to anything should never be trifled with. Stabwars.

I reckon unlocking the best of anything in any game should be reasonably difficult & therefore rewarding once achieved. Being able to bypass with a fistful of dollars is my only gripe.

No matter how you look at the situation, Battlefront II just received a heap of publicity.

Don't forget those characters were free and available day #1 on battlefront 2.

Holy crap that guy Chief linked literally predicted this exact nzgamer article, a follow up article with minimal effort that simply points out there have been changes. This article doesn't mention that one of those changes was to reduce rewards so yeah EA still want your money.

Just another example publishers pushing the envelope in this microtransaction model. Its getting out of hand really. I dont mind lootboxes etc If I can earn everything in game semi-easily, and its cosmetic only... But to lock content like characters is total BS.
