Summer Games Done Quick 2017 Raises $1.7M For Charity, Breaks Previous Record

Summer Games Done Quick 2017 has come to an end, and the charity stream raised a lot of money. The speedrunning community brought in $1.7 million USD for Doctors Without Borders. They also shattered last year’s record, which raised about $1.3M USD.

The event featured prominent speedrunners, making their way through their favourite games as quickly as possible. Viewers could donate to influence elements of the playthroughs – like naming specific characters.

The stream – which took place over seven days – was bookended by NieR: Automata, and Earthbound. Other prominent games included Dark Souls, Crash Bandicoot, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Multiple stipulations were applied to several runs. Some featured glitches, while others weren’t allowed to use them.

You can watch some of the archived runs here.

Caught a few of these runs over the last couple of years - kinda humbling to watch games that took me months as a kid torn through in a couple of hours. Great event.

The amount of time, skill and dedication these guys put in baffles me. Fully deserving of the money they've raised.

I can't believe there was a FF7 speedrun and I missed it.

They have a youtube channel called Games Done Quick, you can watch all the runs there, or you could go through the twitch archive but it's a bit tedious finding the runs you want to see.

OMG I saw a meme of that with her stabby scene. That was the first thing I saw. Amazing, and can't understand it until I watch (which is never).
