Developer Blizzard has made the original StarCraft and its expansion Brood War free to download and play. This arrives alongside a new patch for the company’s classic RTS, as well as in preparation for the HD remaster due this winter.
“In addition to the new features, bug fixes and making StarCraft and Brood War free, Version 1.18 sets the stage for the upcoming StarCraft: Remastered upgrade,” reads the press release. “This upgrade will include 4K Ultra HD graphics, remastered dialog and audio, and a host of other new improvements to StarCraft and Brood War, while maintaining the strategic gameplay that has made StarCraft an enduring classic for nearly 20 years.”
In an interesting move, both games will be fully compatible with each other – meaning those that download the free version can play against those running StarCraft: Remastered.
