The Weekend Chat: Good Animations

Social media exploded this week around the animation quality seen in a certain game, but sometimes we don’t do enough to celebrate those that get it right. Be it a character action with some fancy dodges, a first-person shooter with a satisfying weapon reload, or a horror game with shambling foes – there’s a multitude of different types of animation on display.

This weekend, we ask you:

What are some of your favourite animations in games?

Maybe its Nero’s counter-attacks in Devil May Cry 4, or Pyramid Head’s dragging blade in Silent Hill 2? Maybe Ken’s dragon punch in Street Fighter?

Let us know in the comments below!

I think SFV is pretty solid, most freeze frames captures a good pose.

Don't Starve because of the art style. Horizon Zero Dawn also has some beautiful combat animation, though human NPC's walking and the face animation in SOME (not all) cut scenes isn't as good. Those combat rolls and stealth slides though!

Geralt's hair.

Well, pretty much all character/npc/enemy movement and animation in Witcher 3. Beautiful work.

I loved the animations on FFXIV pre-A Realm Reborn. They were very realistic, didnt stop instantly when you stopped running etc. They changed it for some reason when they changed the game.

I always thought Vega's back handspring and German suplex in the Street Fighter 2 titles was great. I used to spam the back handspring once a round just for the majesty.

Beyond Oasis on Mega Drive (And it's Saturn follow up) both had cool animations, especially the rolling sword attack.

Otherwise Kratos blades of chaos animations from all the games he was in were super satisfying.

Alien Isolation, specifically, the Alien itself. Jaw dropping.

The Tomb Raider reboots, the way she would touch walls instinctively made you feel part of the environment. Plus Lara's hair > Geralt's hair.

As much hate as the Call of Duty series gets, character animation is pretty great, especially clambering and vaulting.

All Naughty Dog games have fantastic animations, the Tomb Raider reboots are slick, and I can't forget the magic that is GTA V, that game is ridiculous, it has so many subtle animations that brinng the world totally to life

Yeah the animations look fantastic in first person, seeing someone else doing things is less impressive, but the first person animations are probably at the peak of current fps games

I might get a bit of stick for this, as these aren't new games, but some of the old SNES and Megadrive games had superb animations. Aladdin and Earthworm Jim spring to mind instantly.
