Capcom Acknowledges Dead Rising 4’s Mixed Reaction

In Capcom’s recent investor meeting, the publisher and developer responded to Dead Rising 4’s mixed critical reception. An investor asked why the game didn’t receive “more distinguished reviews.” The company responded, saying the game’s more “approachable nature” didn’t resonate with everyone.

"Compared to the series up to now, this game was made more approachable in order to allow a wider audience to enjoy it," Capcom said. "However, there was a wider range of opinions for the new game. Moving forward, we intend to grow unit sales on a continuous basis by releasing additional digital download content while implementing updates for improvements."

Dead Rising 4 released in December 2016 for Xbox One and PC. As GameSpot points out, Capcom predicted the zombie-slaying action game to ship 2 million units by the end of March. It’s unclear if this target has been met.

We reviewed Dead Rising 4, scoring it 8/10. Writer Tony Hsiang praised the game’s Christmas aesthetic, but found it to be mechanically slim.

I feel too many companies fall for the same trap. They make a great game, but throughout the series they want more and more sales, so they modify it forgetting what made it great in the first place. Then they have to go back to "roots"

I think they were stuck between a rock and a hard place: 50% of DR fans loved the timer mechanic, while the other half hated it. So it was going to be a difficult choice to implement one or the other, and ultimately they went with the latter and removed the mechanic.

I wish they kept the same kind of pressure on you that you got from dr1&2 the game wasn't super easy to manage, you had to make choices sometimes because something wasn't as easy as you thought it would be, now since 3 the game has just been here have all the tools to be basically invincible straight away

I have played all the Dead Rising games and this was my favourite. It doesn't matter what you do someone is going to complain. Look forward to the next one and really hope they don't bring back the escort missions, toilet saves, crafting stations and timed missions. I like the games despite of those things not because of them.
