NZGamer.com 2016 Game of the Year Awards

NZGamer.com have today launch the 2016 Game of the Year Awards, celebrating some of the best that the gaming industry has put on offer. There are a total of 24 categories, including the prestigious Game of the Year!

2016 saw some major releases late in the year, so hopefully you’ve managed to find some time to play most of them. What was your favourite game? The most surprising? Your favourite exclusive? Vote now and have your say!

Vote in as many categories as you wish, and if there’s a game you think deserves a spot, simply tell us in the Other box. Games that receive substantial write-ins will join the nominees.

The nominees for Game of the Year are:

  • Overwatch
  • Final Fantasy XV
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
  • The Last Guardian
  • The Witness
  • Gears of War 4

The voting phase of the awards runs from today until February 6. Winners will be announced shortly after.

I would of gone with Gears but only 2 player campaign after being used to 4 player put me off.

To be fair I didn't vote in the Nintendo or handheld section because I haven't played or owned any of them.

Wow I haven't played any of those, my vote would be for SFV or Rise of the Tomb Raider (Although that was release last year also). Wait... no Doom?

I feel like the most popular games will win and not the most deserving games, But im glad to see Tyranny there it's rather underrated.

Your comment underlies something in the gaming industry that puzzles me. Games like COD which are so popular year after year - yet by far not the best games in their genres. I would like to think popularity would be driven by the games which are the best quality, but it's clearly not the case.

Yup. It's the same with any so called "awards" when it comes to gaming, it's always the popular ones and not necessarily the ones that actually deserve them. This is especially true when it comes to the "awards shows", they are nothing more than advertising for the games industry.

Said me, and I stand by it. It's a work of art; just because people didn't get it or expected something else doesn't make it any less the masterpiece that it was.

On it's own, without all the hype and circ*mstance, it's actually a pretty cool game, and undeniably an astounding piece of technology. The new free additions also make it a bit more interesting. Could it have been more? Sure. But for the size of the team, and the amount of exploration, and cool things that you CAN see - it really is a good title.

I really feel sorry for the team at Hello Games. With the pressure to make it seem worthy of the attention Sony and the press was giving it, it's no wonder that the public's expectations could never be satisfied. Doesn't stop it from being good for what it is - a relaxing walking and space exploration simulator, with the odd bout of simplistic combat, trading, and cataloging.
