The Weekend Chat: The Year in Review

2016 is wrapping up. All the major releases are out, and all that remains is for us to finally play some of them over the holiday break!

We saw some experimental approaches to games this year. The likes of Hitman tried out the episodic model, MOBAs like League of Legends and DOTA saw significant changes to their core systems, and titles like Battlefield 1 took the action to a challenging time-era.

As we make our way into 2017, we ask you:

What would you like to see more or less of in 2017?

Games with broader, more inclusive casts of characters? Maybe fewer micro-transactions in full-priced retail releases? Let us know in the comments below!

Less time between announcement and release. Also would love to be jamming with rdr2 crash bandicoot of ff7 remake. Also need to find more in depth quality time for gaming

Maybe no microtransactions in full price releases would be better? I'd like to see more of what Respawn and 343 done with the DLC models for Titanfall 2 and Halo 5 respectively, namely not charging for map packs so as not to split the player base. Good moves there, much respect.

Also, season passes, preorder bonuses, and early access for paying more can take a hike. So sick of seeing these practices, and sadly, it's just the norm nowadays.

And what Siege did, don't forget Siege, it has a similar model with Characters. Free for everyone, but by a Season pass to get 7 day early access to them and get them free, instead of with renown (the earned currency)

Keen to see more of No Mans Sky - it would be great to get to the game they envisioned, that and add some VR functionality.

Otherwise I think it really is time for some of the franchise releases to take a year or two off and get some fresh IPs going. While Skylanders was a step above last year's effort, the sameness of the Imaginations took the shine away and as for CoD, it's just not hitting peoples buttons anymore. If only the'd get on and release the Modern Warfare remaster as a standalone, they might see what they had under their noses all along.

Fingers crossed for more VR, less HD'ing of games that are too fresh and the Switch might have a battery worth a damn.

Star Wars Battlefront 2, with perhaps a single player addition would be awesome!

One horrible new idea was porting mobile games to PC, complete with build and wait gameplay and constant requests for your cash. Steam has far too many of these showing up now.

More games like Inside, the campaign of Titanfall 2 and Dying Light: The Following. All these games had superb mechanics/gameplay coupled with great story, very little busy work and a sprinkling of innovation - the perfect combination in my eyes. I want less walking simulators, insanely long busy work simulators and overhyped nonsense masquerading as innovation.
