Overwatch Comic Portrays Lesbian Relationship, Russia Blocks It

Developer Blizzard released a new Overwatch webcomic today, which portrays a positive lesbian relationship with character Tracer and her partner. That same webcomic however, has been blocked in Russia.

As Eurogamer reports, Twitter user Malkythera first picked up on the news. When trying to load the webcomic in Russia, the following message is displayed.

Twitter user YellowAfterlife translated the message, which reads:  "In accordance with Russian law we cannot share this comic with our players on territory of Russian Federation."

Russia has strict laws about the portrayal of homosexual relationships, especially what it deems as “gay propaganda.” In 2013 the country’s parliament ruled in favour of a bill, with the intent of “protecting children from information advocating for a denial of traditional family values.”

This isn’t the first time Russia has banned game content which supports LGBTQ rights. MPs called for a ban on FIFA 17, after a free update offered Rainbow uniforms.

You can read the full webcomic here.

This comic is adorable. I don't even play Overwatch and I love it.

Also c'mon Russia, you used to be cool. I mean, not recently... Or before 1991... But you had a pretty good run for a while there. Be the cool Russia again.

That is ridiculous. Do they ban fan fiction? Or porn sites? Legitimate question, I don't actually know. But there is undoubtedly far wilder Overwatch stuff out there than this comic

Yeh not surprising at all, considering they're a culture with laws.

I wonder what Iran and Israel have to say about it. And India... UAE... Indonesia... Actually we could look closer to home and wonder what percentage of our population think that gay comics cause earthquakes and AIDS.
