The Weekend Chat: The Jump to Mobile

Super Mario Run released today, representing Nintendo’s first major push into the mobile market. The cutesy platformer sees Mario automatically run from left-to-right, with controls being simplified to a single tap of the screen – making the iconic plumber jump.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen classic franchises or characters re-imagined for smaller screens. Square Enix has shifted the likes of Hitman, Deus Ex, and Tomb Raider to phones, distilling the core of those experiences to completely different control schemes. The monster-catching powerhouse Pokemon even accomplished the same with Pokemon Go.

So this week, we ask you:

What games do you think could make the jump to mobile?

What franchises lend themselves to a pick-up-put-down gameplay loop? What would be some of the challenges in bringing them to phones? Any franchises that shouldn’t be touched?

Let us know in the comments below!

I think Metroid, or Castlevania could make fun infinite runners in the vein of SMR.

Mobile companion apps with task management and setup options to complement real games would be nice.

I can't think of any existing game I'd like adapted to mobile. .. well some pokemon ones would be alright actually.

Some of the old-school Sega Master System games would be ideal for iOS/ Android. Games like Enduro Racer, Alex Kidd in Miracle World (with quick save feature), Chase HQ, California Games, Wonder Boy 3 (also with quick save feature) etc would all be great games to play on the iPhone/ Android.

Yeah I haven't tried the Battlefield app, I have no idea what it does, but I expect that's what I mean.

MGS V had a good one for consoles, apparently, with which you could use the map functions, call support, issue buddy commands etc. whilst remaining in the game on your main screen. That kind of thing would be ideal.

Even the xbone smartglass app was really handy for messaging and suchforth.

How would Witcher 3 work on a mobile? They'd have to simplify it quite significantly, like... What kind of controls are you imagining?

In 10 years mobile gaming might outstrips current day consoles, we don't know. idk, connect a controller do it?

Something like Advance Wars could work on mobile to an extent - I'm still holding out that there is one in the works at the secret labs of Intelligent Systems! One can hope...

Civilization Revolution was great on mobile. Would like to see them port the full CIv 6 like they did with Xcom.
