UPDATE: Developer Niantic has officially confirmed to IGN that new monsters are on the way for Pokemon Go, but they won't appear as part of the update hinted at in the Starbucks promotion.
Here's the statement:
The Pokémon Company International and Niantic, Inc. will reveal details on December 12 about the first addition of more Pokémon to Pokémon GO, one of the most popular mobile games of the year. Stay tuned, Trainers!
So there you have it -- you'll have to wait til next week for official news on that new Pokedex.
Original story follows:
Pokemon Go – the augmented reality monster catching game – could be getting a Starbucks promotional tie-in this week. Leaked promotional images for staff seem to indicate that – in the US at least – the coffee-serving store chain will start acting gyms and Pokestops this Friday.
While this news doesn’t sound of interest to New Zealanders, there is one potential highlight. The promotional material talks about “collaborating with Pokémon in their new update on Thursday, December 8.” Dataminers have previously found references to a new generation of monsters hidden in the game’s files, so we could see Pokemon Gold and Silver’s menagerie of 100 beasts make its way to the mobile game.
If new monsters are rolled out this week, it’s unknown if they’ll also appear in New Zealand.
This isn’t the first cross-promotional event for Pokemon Go. When the game launched in Japan, McDonalds stores acted as sponsored locations.
