Legendary Pictures announced today that they’ve picked up the rights to a Detective Pikachu movie, with filming to begin next year.
According to The Hollywood Reporter (via IGN), the film will be live-action. Apart from that, no further details like plot, character details, or cast have surfaced. Universal Pictures will distribute the film globally, except in Japan – Toho will handle that front. According to their sources, Netflix was also very interested by the property.
This news lines up rather well with current Pokémon Go fever, which has reinvigorated the public’s interest in the franchise. Legendary has been trying to pick up the film rights to Pokémon since April earlier this year.
The game that the movie will probably be based on – Great Detective Pikachu – released in Japan back in February. It hasn’t seen a western release.
