New Zealand’s Most Popular Games in May

The IGEA (Independent Games & Entertainment Association) has posted another list of top selling games in New Zealand, this time for the week ending 29 May 2016. To no one’s surprise, both Uncharted 4 and Overwatch – the mega hits from Naughty Dog and Blizzard respectively – are taking up the top slots.

Grand Theft Auto V – a game which released in 2013, and saw remasters in 2014 and 2015 for modern consoles and PC – is still moving units, as indicated by its number 5 slot. This is impressive, given that the game has already shipped over 65 million copies since its launch.

Take a look at the full list below:

  1. Overwatch, Blizzard Entertainment (Activision Blizzard)
  2. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Sony Computer Ent. (Sony)
  3. Doom 2016, Bethesda Softworks
  4. Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Activision (Activision Blizzard)
  5. Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar Games (Take 2)
  6. NBA 2K16, 2K Sports (Take 2)
  7. FIFA 16, Electronic Arts
  8. Far Cry: Primal, Ubisoft
  9. UFC 2, Electronic Arts
  10. Battlefield 4, Electronic Arts

You can head on over to the IGEA's website to get a more detailed break-down of sales per platform.

Let's be honest though, UC4 got SECOND being EXCLUSIVE to one unit, whereas Overwatch is across multiple platforms, soooooo...

(Shout-out to DOOM and FC: Primal in there though!)

Unless I am missing a joke here, Overwatch isn't a F2P game

The article title is misleading. This is just sales for one week. Generally speaking, most big new releases take out the number one spot happily. There's been a couple of notable exceptions: Dirt Rally didn't chart well at all (I think it didn't even chart), which I was surprised about; Rugby Challenge 3 beat Ratchet & Clank, which wouldn't take #1 until the next week; and Uncharted 4 beat Doom, which also didn't take #1 until the week after, probably when the positive word of mouth got out. The latter was also probably expected as they both launched in the same tracking week.

It's interesting to see the charts each week. IGEA does them well, with breakdowns per platform. There's been some fascinating things to watch, like the drop off of Rugby Challenge 3 -- I would have expected that to have more legs than Far Cry: Primal, for example.

But to your point, the fact that this is one weeks worth of sales makes Uncharted 4's legs even more impressive, especially as an exclusive. But then again, this country is a PlayStation nation and you can always see that in the charts. A lot of the positions in the overall Top 10 are made up simply by the title charting highly in the PS4 charts whereas sometimes they don't even appear in the Xbox charts. And sadly, most Xbox One exclusives take a dive out of the Top 10 after the first week on sale.
