Dead Space
Published Saturday 6 Dec 2008 11:26am | PlayStation 3Dead Space is an amazing game full stop. Anyone who disagrees with this has never played it or been living in a whole for their life. In the game you star as Isaac Clarke who is sent with a fellow team of workers to find out why the ship isn't working. This is where the peace and tranquility of company ends, their space ship "conveniently " crashes upon landing on the mining barge. You are then forced to separate from the remainder of your team to seek out the ships occupants, and to much disbelief all you will find is a bunch of blood obsessed crazies.
These crazies, better known to the scientific community as Necromorphs which are humans altered by an alien strand of D.N.A. Remember the whole judge a book by the cover rule, and shoot them down as soon as you see them. "Cut off their limbs"- is one quote left by a dead corpse that you will NOT forget, this is the only way to slow them down and to allow yourself enough time to think and finally take them out, as you don't want one of these beasties getting their hands/talons on you.
There are also different types of everyones favorites, the Necromoprhs. There a the thin, sword hand like ones. There are the agile, fast and buff ones. There are the midget, missile shooting tentacle ones. There are the chubby, fat, slow ones which shoot out alien babies after dying. And there are my favorite ones, which you will really hate encountering, these are the I'm stuck on a wall with 10 foot tentacles that cut cut you in half if you get close to me ones, and by the way they can also launch tentacle bombs from their stomachs. You can't help to think how messed up the developers at E.A where when they came up with the beasties.
Just thought I should mention that this game is not intended for the light hearted as you will often die in excessively violent and disturbing ways. The violence you can emmit is pleasing but VERY violent. Just to warn you if you are looking for a game in which you will be happy and overwhelmed with joy after turning off your gaming system, this is not the game for you.
The gameplay in Dead Space is epic and by far one of the best 3rd person engine used in any game i've seen to date. You travel the ship completing tasks told to you by an army guy or some crazy woman who left you after your ship crashed. These missions vary from saving the oxygen in the ship to taking out massive leviathan using gun turrets or even better taking one out in a zero gravity environment using little but your weapons at hand.
These zero gravity environments are hell-of allot of fun. Your wall become the ceiling and your ceiling become your butcher shop i which you can take out your enemies on. The zero gravity environments are sometimes secured with oxygen but other times whilst there is a hull breach there is no oxygen so you must be fast and swift to avoid dying from the lack of it.
The weapons you obtain in the game are often engineering tools like a plasma cutter or a ripper, which you can use to cut and tear your necromorph friends apart. Other weapons include assault riffles, line guns (my personal favorite,) flame-throwers and a burst shotgun thing. During combat there is also primary and secondary ranges of firing. Such as your line gun doubles as a mine shooter or your shotgun doubles as a grenade shooter.
In combat there is also the normal melee attacks which helps when short of ammo and a simple stepping finisher which you can use when your enemies are lying in a pool of blood on the floor. Isaac also has super special powers by using his kinesis module, he has two abilities which help you in combat and problem solving. There is a slow time on objects ability, which can slow down fast moving objects/platforms or you can use the slow time to stop necromorphs and deliver killer melees on the which makes them bounce around like a beach balls. The second ability allows you to pick up items without your hands and chuck them at other thing etc. This mean you can cut a necromorph into chop sized pieces then select and arm or even their head and fire them at other necromoprhs, this provides necessary comic belief between generally on the edge battles.
Another thing I need to mention is that the graphics are beautiful just like a next gen game should be but these graphics a just outstanding. The clarity you can get in dark environments makes it really intense, and it even-looks good on my crappy 20 inch Tv which says allot about how good it would be on a high def. L.C.D.
There is also quite a bit of extra downloadable content in the playstation store and the xbox live marketplace. Although they do cost money there is nothing better than buying stronger cooler looking weapons or new armor to help you throughout harder difficulties of play. There is also unlock-able trophies which make you scrounger the ship searching for and carrying out extra tasks
The different replay-ability factor is alright as you can play the game over in harder more challenging difficulties, but if you decide the difficulty is good you can continue the game after you finish it off more and more times with the same weapons and armor you had in your previous games, which is very similar to the replay-ability used in resident evil games.
After beating the game on impossible the third time I have to admit it does get VERY repetitive and losses its scare factor after a while which can make some people put the game down after the first ending. The story is remotely short and some people could argue that the 100$ price tag is too much for a one weekend game. If you are unsure about buying it just rent it for three days that should be more than enough time to finish it and you should be happy to have played this wonderful game.
In conclusion this game is a must play, either buy buying or hiring it, the gameplay and graphics are outstanding although you are left begging for more after the rather short story is completed. So if you are looking for a little survival horror in your life then go pick it up and give it a shot but beware of the R18 tag stuck on the front of the case as as mentioned this is not for the wannabe adrenaline junkie. 9/10
