Fallout 3
Published Thursday 4 Dec 2008 4:46pm | PlayStation 3To start off I would like to congratulate Bethesda on creating such a diverse gaming experience, this is my favorite game of 2008 and should remain in every gamers PS3/ Xbox 360 or their PC, as this one is a keeper.
The amount of detail in the Fallout 3 universe has never looked so good, from head to toe you can see the slightest details in areas which make you think how long it would have taken developers to create. No two places in the nuked Washington D.C are ever the same which makes you want to explore the wasteland more and more, until you become mentally exhausted from playing it in prolonged periods of time as the wastelands will take alot out of you.
This action in the game is literally incredible as the encounters you make in the wasteland make you feel eerie and strange. Picture this after escaping from a safe haven in an apocalyptic environment you travel to to the washington memorial where you encounter armored warriors fighting super mutants (that remind me of the yellow guy from sin city.) These encounters throughout the game chuck you in the weirdest situations and somehow you are able to fight your way off in extremely gruesome ways.
Believe nothing feels better than taking down a 30 foot tall mutant by firing at it which miniature nukes or sniping a ghouls head off with a scoped .44 magnum, in a gruesome cinematic made possible by v.a.t.s. Vats (Vault assisted targeting system) is such a change from normal first person shoot em' ups as you can target individual body parts by pausing the game and let vats blow up your foes for you, either by decapitating their heads or by taking their arms and legs off with a combat shotgun, the decision is up too you.
R.P.G elements also come into play which where based upon the P.C centric prequels. Leveling up after gaining experience points from killing enemies or by completing missions allows you to upgrade your abilities and with each level allows you to select a perk which get better after your levels progress. One of my favorite perks is Bloody Mess. This allows your original blows to become much more gruesome and generally allot funnier, that is if your into watching limbs and torso exploding into this air by a simple 10mm pistol.
The amount of gameplay available in this game is unbelievable as you can complete your main quest which is finding your father (voice acted by Liam Neson, which is a nice touch) or you can complete other peoples missions by your self or with an A.I partner, (many different partners are available throughout the game.)
You can also decide to be good or bad, which can change the games endings and gives variations in choices throughout the game. The choice is up to you, whether you want to murder innocent civilians or align yourself with the merciless fighting force the brotherhood of steel, it is really up to you.
One of the only downsides is that on my PS3 I sometimes find the game freezes during V.A.T.S, which makes me through my controller against a wall and scream obscenities at the top of my voice. This is supposedly different for the Xbox 360 and PC, but I did expect the game to work fine across all platforms. Another downside for the PS3 is the lack of trophies and downloadable content (at the moment for PS3,) this is also different for the Xbox 360, and downloadable content is expected for both the Xbox 360 and the unfotunitly P.C, but not the PS3.
In conclusion apart from the minor flaws on the PS3 this game is amazing, possible one of my favorite games I have, (and believe me when i've played allot of games.) The overall quality in the game is amazing and the story keeps you gaging for more, one hell-of an experience I say, 9/10.
