E3 2014: Nintendo - What Happened & What I Thought

It's the satisfaction of the scratch that you get to itch;

It's the ice cold beer after a hard day in the sun;

It's the soft kiss after a successful date;

It's the energy of a wild crowd partying hard;

It's the enthusiasm of a the fans at a major championship competition;

It's the excitement as your favourite team get a goal winning breakaway;

E3 2014 - WHWIT

This event is on par with Christmas to me each and every year. Here is everything I saw on Day 0 and what I thought.

Oh! I'll also post a little blurb at the bottom of each about how my predictions went.

Enjoy :)

Wow, that was a fantastic event. Loved the humor and all the Robot Chicken-styled skits, honestly, loved those so much. There were a ton of pretty cool game announcements and it's great that we finally have some information about the Wii U Zelda title. Yoshi's Wooly World is a gorgeous title. The Mii Fighters are a fun addition to Super Smash Bros, and it was cool seeing a new addition to the SSB roster with Lady Palutena.

Hyrule Warriors felt like a breathe of fresh air in the Dynasty Warriors-type of games. Very bright and vibrant with a ton of Zelda-universe enemies on the screen for your roster of great Zelda characters performing stunning techniques. Splatoon looks like a fantastic title to play against your friends, hopefully the online modes will be just as much fun as the couch-combat.

One of the amazing take aways from the show was definitely the Amiibo device, I can't wait to see what other figures will be available and what games will take advantage of them. The Mario figure itself looked to be of a very high quality, if all the Nintendo franchises get their own figures and game actually make use of them, this could be a fantastic addition to the Wii U's arsenal.

Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker looked like some great Mario-styled fun, it will be great when we get a bit more information on it to see how Toad;s gameplay really mixes it up against the traditional Mario play. Xenoblade Chronicles X looked like a fun space combat sim but I wasn't a fan of the facial animations; at least those that were used in the trailer that we saw. Mario Maker really spoke to the child in me and the lack of an actual Mario title has been completely removed because of this addition... now we can make our own sequels and Mario adventures!

With regards to the digital event itself, Pokemon Omega Red and Alpha Sapphire look cool, you can see that they have made great use of the engine that powered X & Y, so I have no doubt these remakes will be great for fans of the series.

From the post-show announcement via the IGN stream, the Wii U exclusive Devil's Third looks really great. For more hardcore/adult gamers this is certainly filling an exclusive void that the Wii U has been lacking in. The title looks great, will be interesting to see what people think when it's released in 2015.

So that was the Nintendo Digital Event... honestly, they had a great showcase with lots of great new titles. Sure we didn't get a new Star Fox (in the Digital Event, it has since been announced) or Metroid, but I think that the titles we did get will tide people over quite well.... at least when they come out in 2015. Nice work Nintendo.

  • Let the Digital Event Begin!
  • What... wait is this... Robot Chicken?
  • HAHA! Love the jokes
  • Reggie-doll just "killed" a person in the audience! So far... this is GREAT!
  • HAHA, Reggie vs. Myamoto!

  • Reggie is holding a Mario figure
  • It's the first look at the new Toys-to-Life system called: Amiibo
  • Information can be saved to the figure using the Wii U Gamepad and the built-in chip
  • Disney Infinity figures may somehow work with the Amiibo figures
  • Amiibo play is being prepared for lots of other games, but at least one will be Mario Kart 8
  • A detailed Amiibo video is coming that will go into it's features in more depth
  • Reggie is talking about the spirit of games and what it's like to make games
  • The Nintendo motto behind creating their game: "There's nothing wrong with having a little fun"... a good creed
  • Yoshi's Wooly World. Very similar to Kirby's Yarn, but all new thanks to the massive 3D and power jump
  • With no time limit there the player can freely explore the entire platforming world
  • This is a very beautiful game
  • This game is all about exploration
  • There are a lot of transformations in the game because Yoshi is made of yarn
  • 2 player co-op. Yoshi can eat up and spit out the other player to anywhere he wants
  • They have gone for a very hand-made look and feel
  • They have done their best to create a game that brings a smile to your face just by owning it
  • Yoshi's Wooly World is coming in 2015
  • Toad is getting an adventure on the Wii U
  • There is a hashtag, #CaptainToad
  • Wow, some of the visuals are pretty amazing
  • Very Mario-like
  • HAHA! Love these Robot Chicken skits! FANTASTIC! (not going to spoil them, check them out if you can)
  • Legend of Zelda time!
  • When developing the new game, they looked back at the original title
  • Wow, this Zelda game looks beautiful, it's very open, the worlds first REAL sandbox Zelda, think Skyrim but cartoony/cell-shaded yet realistic... stunning; absolutely stunning
  • Fast faced Zelda actionl we're seeing how the new Zelda game will flow
  • And that's it, I want more, but looks like we'll have to wait for 2015
  • Now we have a live action 10-12 year old kid exploring a cave
  • We are getting a new look at the 2 new Pokemon titles; Omega Red and Alpha Sapphire
  • HAHA, ahhhhhhhhh, skits! Non-stop funny! Oh man!

  • It's actually a very beautiful game, very fast paced and the scale of the enemies is pretty cool
  • HAHA, unlockable costumes

  • (I wish I could type fast enough to get the speakers names... sorry)
  • Oh! Looking at the new Hyrule Warriors game again
  • Wow, WOW! Hmmm... very Dynasty Warriors like... huh, how didn't I get that Warriors references...
  • There are a ton of enemies and a whole bunch of great looking moves from all your favourite Zelda characters
  • It's a brand new experience taking great things from both series' to make an title that they hope fans of both will love
  • Hyrule Warriors is releasing on September 26, 2014
  • Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, coming in 2015, missed the name of the game, flashed up and away too quickly
  • Now for a new sci-fi type game
  • Looks interesting, has a Macross feel
  • The facial animations are pretty stiff, even for a Nintendo title
  • Xenoblade Chronicles, coming in 2015
  • Wow, Reggie doesn't like people asking about StarFox :P
  • Oooohhh, Mario Maker!?!
  • Very cool, completely customizable levels! ~ 8 year old Luke is going crazy right now!
  • From the looks of things you can make original Mario style maps and then convert them to the "New Mario"" 3D style, that's AMAZING, looks great!
  • Coming in 2015
  • Now for a new game called Splatoon
  • People shooting ink with guns, and then you can turn into a squid and quickly travel through your own ink
  • It's all about territory control, get your ink spread out to take control of the map
  • There are a bunch of great features and mechanics in this title
  • Oh! So you move a LOT slower in your enemies ink
  • You can hide in your ink to surprise people
  • Interesting game, no story by the looks, just pure gameplay fun, and it looks it
  • Love the look and feel and jumping in/out of the ink is really cool
  • Coming in 2015
  • Reggie is back and inviting people to check out even more content that they weren't able to fit in the Digital Event, so I guess there will be more news coming out over the next day or so
  • Nintendo's Twitch channel will be running pretty heavily during the week of e3 with a ton of developers and Nintendo celebrities talking
  • Is this some sort of Zelda Anime?
  • Oooohhhh... New Character for Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS
  • Lady Palutena!
  • Then Miyamoto closes the show out inviting everyone to the Nintendo Treehouse (their Twitch stream)
  • And that is that, Show over
  • Devil's Third (Wii U Exclusive)
  • Fantastic looking action title with a tattoo'd character destroying enemies with swords and massive guns. The voice acting and animations looked great, especially for a Wii U title (weird that that's actually a qualifier)
  • The Multiplayer trailer for Devil's Third
  • 3rd AND 1st person action
  • There is a Map maker included
  • Lots of verticality and ways to traverse the environment
  • Killstreaks and gore galore

So that was the Nintendo Digital Event, and that wraps up the coverage of the major Press Showcases for the 2014 E3. We've had a lot of awesome surprises (and some epic confirmations) but the real question is what do you think?

Well, I know I did one yesterday, but here are the scores with Nintendo included... that is, for if I was forced to give a score:

Microsoft: 8.5/10

Electronic Arts: 6/10

Ubisoft: 7/10

Sony: 8/10

Nintendo: 9/10

Yeah, yeah... I know I gave MS the win, but that was for the actual Press Conferences, this was a Digital Event :P But seriously, I was too early giving a "winner", Nintendo had a fantastic showing with tons of massive exclusives coming to their systems, sucks that most of them aren't hitting until 2015, but everything they showed (especially the team-up with Robot Chicken) was perfect. Great job Nintendo!
