Fat Princess
Published Monday 3 Aug 2009 11:38am | PlayStation 3Fat Princess is the kind of game that is a perfect fit for the PSN. It's got that pick up and play appeal and addictive gameplay that will have you coming back time and time again.
Fat Princess is pretty much capture the flag but done in a way that add's enough new features to make it feel fresh and original. It pits the classic red vs blue in an action packed struggle to regain your kidnapped princess. It adds a huge amount of variety and strategy by introducing 5 classes: Worker, Warrior, Mage, Priest, Ranger all of which can be upgraded mid-game.
Games are played out in 32 man matches. Teams must balance offence and defence in order to protect the enemy princess while recapturing their own. You feed cake to fatten up the captive princess (hence the name) making her more difficult to carry. While gathering resources upgrading units and battling it out with the enemy.
What surprised me most about this game is the amount of strategy required, and in a lot of ways it plays like a real time strategy but with each unit being controlled by a player. For instance, workers will chop trees, gather minerals and build siege structures, warriors will be on the frontlines battling enemies, rangers will be firing arrows from afar while priests and mages offer support in battle.
The balance in this game is amazing. This is usually the thing I dislike most about games with classes, they offer a number of different options but only one or two of them are useful. In Fat Princess however, every class serves their purpose. Workers are essential to helping the team, warriors and rangers have awesome offensive power, Mages are great for crowd control, while priests are mandatory if you ever want to have a good shot at capturing the princess. There are a huge number of strategic possibilities.
The game also has a sense of humour and charm that escalates it above anything else I've played on the PSN. From the menu's, to the in game voices and visuals, it all fits together really well to create a feeling of "Fun".
Speaking about visuals, this game really shines, Titan have done an awesome job in not only making the game look technically excellent, but also have a distinct sense of style. Bright colours and a childish cartoony feel are offset by a blood soaked battlefield. The blood never becomes intrusive though, it still keeps a light hearted look to it that keeps it from becoming offensive. Sound holds up as well as every other part of the game with cartoony music playing behind the violent slices and explosions of war.
There has been criticism about network problems, but I haven't seen them. Games run relatively lag free and matches are easy enough to join.
All in all, I think this is the must have game of the PSN. It's creative, colourful, addictive, and most of all fun. It's an action game that packs in a ton of variety and strategy. The NZ price tag may seem a little hard to swallow but once your play it, you'll know it was money well spent. It's a game that needs to be played.
