Savage Moon (PSN)

Published Monday 2 Mar 2009 3:49pm | PlayStation 3

7/10

Savage Moon is a great Tower defense game for new-comers to the genre, but for people who have already played Pixel Junk Monsters (PJM) this offers nothing new. While the game is solid the lack of innovation makes this game a nice-to-have opposed to a must-have.

Savage Moon is your typical tower defense game, you use resources to construct towers in order to protect oil mines from pesky alien bugs. It's a simple premise and it works well. While all the pieces work well together the lack of imagination may leave you a little disinterested.

The gameplay itself adheres closely to the genre, you have alien bugs that spawn from bunkers and it is your job to strategically build towers to kill them before they reach your precious oil mines. Towers are upgradeable and waves of bugs become stronger as the game progresses. It's all pretty much a standard affair. For what it is, everything works really well, maps are easy to navigate and the controls are perfectly intuitive.

The graphics are also really nice for a downloadable title, given the only competition for this genre is PJM, this game is technically a lot better looking. However, it lacks the artistic style and personality of PJM. The stages also look awfully similar to each other with very little variation from one to the next.

The sound is ok, and what you might expect from the game, music that goes with the game well, and sound effects that match the onscreen action. Nothing bad about it but nothing stunning either.

All in All Savage moon is a solid Tower defense game that lacks the personal touch. Stages to look awfully similar, and the gameplay sticks too strictly to the genre to truly stand out. If you haven't played PJM this game would be an excellent game to introduce yourself to the world of towers killing things. If you already have PJM, this game offers little more than a fresh coat of paint. Savage Moon is great to pick up and play in small doses but don't expect the addictive play you'll find in that other tower defense game.
