Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

Published Monday 2 Mar 2009 3:29pm | PlayStation 3

9/10

Super Street Fighter II HD Turbo Remix (SSF2HDTR) apart from having a name too long for any game to have to endure, is old school gaming at it's best.

This game is a true testimant to the franchise, and if nothing else, it shows why Street fighter was so popular a decade and a half ago. Characters are all balanced perfectly, and while most tend to stick with the typical characters (Ryu and Ken) the whole roster can be just as deadly. Being older (and I can only assume wiser) I now truly appreciate the depth of this game. When I was young, it was all fireballs and dragons, now I can see what made this game truly great, the possibilty that any character can win using timing and tactics.

The most obvious upgarde this game has received are the graphics which are awesome. Every character frame has been redrawn in 1080 resolution, perfectly matching those in the old version and the backgrounds look comparitively as good.

The sound is just as good as it ever was, and it is great that while they lifted the quality of the audio, they haven't changed the voices or music so it retains that old school vibe.

Online multiplayer is surprisingly smooth also. I've played Fighting games online in the past and they have always been unplayable because of lag. However, even though I'm in NZ playing Americans you can still play a decent game which is surprisingly smooth, hours of fun.

What I think is most impressive about SSF2HDTR is the fact that it is just as relevant now as it ever was, A game that is both fiercely competitive and unbelievably addictive. Good for veterans and new-comers alike.

Maybe my childhood memories of afternoons at the corner dairy and pockets full of 20c coins may cause me to blindly love this game, but to be honest I don't care I think it's amazing and would urge anyone to buy it when it eventually gets released here.
