Valkyria Chronicles
Published Monday 2 Mar 2009 3:27pm | PlayStation 3Every once in a while a game comes along that is brave enough to do something different, whether that's in presentation, gameplay or in it's storyline. Valkyria Chronicles does all three and creates a game unlike anything you have played (at least on the current generation). Part Strategy RPG, part Action, this game delivers something truly unique.
The story plays out like a story book, you will live out the retelling of Squad 7, and more specifically their leader Welkin Gunther. A military unit who is protecting their nation from bordering countries. The story is wonderfully paced and the characters are endearing.
To explain the depths of the gameplay would be near impossible, technically it is a Strategy RPG. The bulk of the gameplay consists of setting your troops, wiping out enemy forces and advancing to a goal. The game offers five classes (scout, engineer, shock trooper, sniper, lancers) each crucial to achieve victory. What really shines about the gameplay is the strategic possibilities, you may find yourself failing often in this game, but this allows you to retool your strategy and go at it again. Some might say this is a flaw and sometimes it is a little unfair not knowing what you are up against, but I enjoy a game with a good amount of challenge.
The graphics, simply put are amazing. It basically looks like a water painting come to life. The style of this game is undeniable and adds real depth to the characters themselves. From an audio standpoint the game also does a great job, quality voice acting and good in battle sfx make this game shine as a top notch production.
Valkyria Chronicles stands out as something truly unique, any fans of the Strategy RPG, Japanese RPG, or even Real Time Strategy must play it, as should anyone vaguely interested in Strategy games in general.
