The Unexpected PSP from a Self Confessed Xbox Fanboy

So this is my first attempt at a blog so bound to be a little average but I thought I'd share an experience with you about a recent encounter with a PSP.

Recently I bought this

^o^// PSP Street E1002 + 8GB Layby OK ^o^

Sony PSP from Trademe didn't cost a lot and certainly didn't expect much at all since as the title of this blog I'm a bit of a Xbox Fanboy (not a true one but very borderline).  The PSP didn't cost much and came with extras like a memory card and I added a trio of games.

Now to be fair to myself I have to admit this was not for me but for my stepsons birthday that was coming up.  So I ultimately never had to like it and never really cared if I did or didn't.

With a few traded in Xbox titles I simply weren't playing anymore I got this and 3 titles as follows for $80.

The games were

Mod Nation Racers

Gran Turismo and

MX vs ATV Untamed.

Now I had no experience with any of these games or this console before with exception to Gran Turismo version something for the Playstation 2 (or hell it could have even been on PS 1) and frankly I hated Gran Turismo and at the time found it to be far from the real racing experience it claimed be.

So again I reiterate didn't expect anything other than to get the PSP with 3 games test it and move it on as something I just had no interest in.

Things just didn't happen quite as I expected...First the console took longer to arrive than expected and although hadn't cost a lot it got me worried about it (worst of all worried about a Playstation WTF lol).  This turned out to be a issue with the courier and not the supplier.

Console once arrived plugged in turned on and that was a good start.  Had I known this was a good start of something else I may never have even bought the thing.

What happened next is something that still amazes me.  I popped a game in Gran Turismo and started it up.  Other than some button unfamiliarity I cranked it up for a couple of laps and thought hmm not bad and moved on.

MX vs ATV Untamed was popped in next.  Cranked it up and started a game and that's when I first noticed something unexpected from this little handheld from Sony.

I found that I was actually smiling as I played and then it dawned on me.  I was actually enjoying myself with it. Again I will keep saying this as didn't think I had it in me but it was a Sony PSP I was actually enjoying and having fun with.

My partner noticed what was going on and demanded her turn so we popped in our third and final game Mod Nation Racers and then it was her turn.  Now she's not much of a gamer and only starting to get into since we've met but she too was really enjoying it.

Then I had my turn on Mod Nation Racers and was really enjoying myself and was just so surpirsed that I was.

Now my partner even joked (well at least I think she was joking) about how we should just keep this and give her son another present or buy another PSP for him.

Straight away I was like no way we'd bought this for her son and that was that plus I'd given up a few Xbox games to do it.  Reluctantly I packed it away and the following day we sent it off and a few days later our son was beaming from ear to ear (we could hear it in his voice when we called for his birthday).

Now on reflection I still have a little smile come up when thinking of this unexpected gem in the PSP and how nearly just very nearly I could have happily said yes and found myself sitting back once in a while sharing a Playstation with my partner and our kids.

So anyway that's that now I'd like to hear about what things whether it's been a console or a handheld you've never given much thought of using that you have found yourself having a go and finding that it just wasn't that bad and you actually had just enjoyed yourself.

I thought the conclusion was going to be you ended up buying three of them! (I'm much prefer xbox to PS too, though it wasn't always that way!)

Well in reality it probably could have but with a pair of Smartphones, a netbook and now a tablet in the house I think I've got my bases covered in portable gaming. Of course though the PSP wasa bit of fun. I'm glad it wasn't a Vita as that my have not left. Cheers

I thought my PSP was great but the Vita is a whole level above. Do miss the movie option via the UMD on the long flights though

I see that they've announced a price drop for the Vita going to be $330 but that'll be same price as the 12Gig PS3. Even with a price drop I think I'd rather spend double and get the PS4 (if I was to go down that path).

Wow quite amazing to see that some people like to read or just come on peoples blogs to give 1 star ratings... 1st 2 votes sitting at 4 rating, 3 votes 4.25, 4 votes dropped to 3.something & now 6 votes for under 3 (according to points page) be nice to get some feedback from your negative ratings so my next attempt at a blog is better. Then again haters gotta hate lol.
