My Top 5 Hardest Bosses of All Time
Published Tuesday 10 Jan 2012 12:15pm |
As its my first Blog, I thought I would start by putting a little bit about me. My name is Jake, I'm 14 years old, grew up in Christchurch and have minor Attention Deficit Disorder. I'm a big RPG fan, but also enjoy sports games and select FPS's. I also enjoy watching alot of Anime, my favourite being One Piece or Fairy Tail. I also play football and tennis.
My Top 5 Hardest Bosses In Gaming
Boss battles can either make or break a game, and in the same way the difficulty plays a big part, too hard and you alienate casual players but attract hardcore players, too easy and you attract casual players but alienate hardcore players. This blog is going to focus on the hardest battles that I have encountered in gaming.

#5 Mile High Club on Veteran - Call of Duty 4
A long time ago (last year) when I was a achievement fiend, I would sit infront of my TV for hours on end trying to do this. Alot of my friends found this easy, but I just could not do it because of my amateur reflexes. The time limit really piled on the pressure, eliminating the normal veteran strategy of covering and jumping up occassionally to pop off a few shots. This level just beat the "Wait for Evac in Pripyat" section to make it onto this list. While not necessarily a boss, the sheer amount of time I put into this one earned it a spot at number 5.

#4 Psycho Mantis - Metal Gear Solid
This guy easily gets a spot at number four, for the pure reason that If you didn't pick up on the hints to unplug your controller, he was literally impossible to defeat. My older brother told me a story once of how he became so angry and frustrated over not knowing how to complete this level, he threw his controller, unplugging it from the console. Just wondering how this boss works on the PSP?
#3 Alma - Ninja Gaiden
THIS. Alma and her laser beams/kicks had me screaming for mercy after a dozen deaths. Alma was always on the offensive, and your only option was to constantly roll out of the way of her attacks, hoping to get away unscathed. After slaving away for ages to beat her, I almost fainted when she appeared again a short while later. Thankfully, she was nowhere near as tough that time around. Alma took a lot of patience to beat, and you gained gallons of inner satisfaction by crushing her into the ground. As hard as Ninja Gaiden itself was, this raised it to a new level.
#2 Completing the game on Expert - Guitar Hero 3
Back when Guitar Hero fever was spreading throughout Schools and the Gaming world, Millions of people worldwide were standing infront of their TV's holding plastic guitar's and generally looking like idiots. I was no exception, and started on a personal mission to complete the game on expert. This was a grueling task, the main challenge presented by Lou, the final Vs. battle in the game. A monster to defeat, he would always get a power-up at the worst time, and I would get the bad ones like Broken String. This guy right here really fitted his Demon image, earning him a spot at number #2.

#1 Ruby Weapon - Final Fantasy VII
Ruby Weapon, a boss far superior to Sephiroth and Emerald Weapon, is the only boss on this list that I haven't actually defeated. I spent a very long time maxing out my characters and getting their ultimate weapons, and maxing out some of the materia's needed. But I couldn't do it, it was just too hard. His OHKO's at the start of the battle, his super-powerul attacks, he was a beast I just couldn't conquer. Even the super-haxxor omnislash wouldn't scratch this guy.
And there you have it, my top 5 hardest boss battles. Please be lenient, as some games that may feature harder bosses are beyond my time, and this list is just compiled from games I have played. I am also aware that a couple are not necessarily bosses, but are the difficulty peaks in their game. Some of the runner-ups include:
- Sephiroth - Kingdom Hearts 2
- Jinpachi - Tekken 5
- Seth - Street Fighter IV
- Virgil on Dante Must Die - DMC3
Please add in the comments what you think is your respective hardest boss, I would be interested to hear your opinions and stuff. Any advice on what I could do to improve future blogs would also be greatly appreciated.

Some of my hardest bosses? I remember getting a little annoyed at Kurt Zisa (I was possibly under-leveled), the 70 man battle in Shenmue was initially quite hard because there isn't much fighting prior to the battle so you don't know how the system works, nearly any give Atlus boss, Gattuso from Tales of Vesperia (he's been given the nickname Noob Killer for it), the final boss battle in God of War (specifically the second stage) and possibly The Captain from Henry Hatsworth.

I wish I wrote as well when I was fourteen. :( Good read, young buddy! :)

And I agree, Gattuso was such a b**ch to take down, and battling the Kratos clones in the Ares fight.
I spent a fair amount of time on #4 and #5 myself. My problem is now that I'm a major trophy wh**e I've kind of lost touch with what's hard and what isn't, because most games include at least one insane thing you have to accomplish now.
I see you have feats on there as well as 'boss' characters.
The survival challenge in God of War, with the rising platform was the most frustrating thing I have ever done.
As for bosses, I'd have to do a fair bit of head scratching over my last 25-30 years of gaming to remember a lot of them and rank them (Big Bubba on C-64 Bubble Bobble for one, and I'm sure the likes of the Last Ninja games had some annoying bosses), but if I'm going current gen, Ndesu on Resident Evil 5 Professional would be one. He is one rare part of Pro difficulty which is actually easier without a human partner.
As far as advice goes, you could put your criteria for selection before your choices, that way it is easier to see why some things made the cut and some were ommited.
Also you can beat Psycho Mantis without unplugging the controller, It took an absurd amount of time after an absurd amount of attempts but I did it. (I was gutted when I found out how I was supposed to do it).
Again, great work. I look foward to reading more from you.
Well written...and most of the games you mentioned i haven't heard of (except Ruby Weapon...but in the game its was only a "want" not a "need"), but i am a game freak and "yes" there are some pretty tough boss stages out there, and when push comes to shove i just Google the "damn" thing for cheats or walkthroughs lol...the only games i never "Google" was the Final Fantasy series because of its freedom to explore without a set path (FF8,10 & 13)...i like the challenge (bosses) but i don't have the patience....call me lazy but i prefer to use that mental energy on a novel, well that's my opinion :)
If someone tells you what to do, your eliminating the 'game' part of the game. You are then not 'gaming' but 'watching'.
Game:
Noun- A form of play or sport, esp. a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill, strength, or luck.
Don't ruin your gaming experience. If it takes 3 days to beat a boss, the rewarding feeling will outweight the impatience to move forward.
Part of the reason the older gamer out there hold's Mario, Sonic, Donkey Kong and alike so dear- We had to do it all ourselves. Altered Beast had nasty bosses you had to learn the pattern of. Once you did, you could beat them injury free, and you felt awesome about it.
