Brace yourselves – military operations are about to go high-tech. The third Ghost Recon title, Ghost Recon: Advancer Warfighter, takes the elite forces of ‘the Ghosts’ into the urban sprawl of Mexico City, and also into the future.
Advanced Warfighter follows faithfully in the footsteps of Ghost Recon 2, which gave the first Ghost Recon’s slow and strategic setup a shot of pure action. Advanced Warfighter will feel a lot like Ghost Recon 2, but with supercharged Xbox 360 graphics, it will look a hell of a lot better. What is more, it boasts some amazingly realistic, and environmentally affected, sound effects.
It is the options provided by the futuristic equipment, though, that really put the game ahead of its predecessor. Video headsets mean your squad members can feed direct visuals to the corner of your screen. And your amazing (and assumedly very expensive) assault rifle can bring up a bright red image of the enemy, even if all but his head or arm is hidden. It’s all the fun of cheating, but without the guilt!
Advanced Warfighter looks to have held on to all the features which made Ghost Recon 2 so much fun multiplayer – but it isn’t just the same old thing. For a start, you will be able to customize your appearance (with various faces, outfits, etc, to choose from). More importantly, however, it will be possible to change aspects of each type of game, allowing for massive variety in gameplay.
In essence, this is a game designed to follow a winning formula and add to it without changing what made it great. I fail to see how this can be a bad idea.
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter joins the fray on the 17th of March for Xbox and Xbox 360, with PS2 and PC versions to follow on the 31st.
