The best of both worlds
I like crossover games. I like taking characters from different games - different universes - and pitting them against each other for my entertainment like some sort of virtual gladiators.
Clearly, Morgan is also a fan, so much so that he wrote a feature about the crossovers that he would like to see. And that got me thinking about the games I’d like to see come to fruition. So, without further ado, here is my addition to what could end up being an endless list of dream games.
Capcom and Arc System Works are two of the biggest names in fighting games - Capcom are responsible for the genre defining Street Fighter series, among others, and Arc are behind the acclaimed Guilty Gear and BlazBlue games.
So pitting these two titans against each other seems like a no brainer. Who wouldn’t want to see a ridiculous projectile spamathon between Street Fighter’s Guile and Blazblue’s ν-13? What about a sweet guitar battle between Darkstalkers’ Lord Raptor and Guilty Gear’s I-No?
How likely is it?
Interestingly, this game actually almost happened. At Tokyo Game Show 2003, Sammy vs Capcom was announced (Sammy being the publisher of Guilty Gear at the time.) Unfortunately nothing has been heard since, and it’s pretty much assumed to be dead. It could happen, especially after Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- comes out and (hopefully) revives interest in the franchise.
I want to play a Metal Gear Solid themed fighting game. I’m sure I’m not alone here. I want to pick Sniper Wolf, call her wolf friends into the fight, and use her rifle to play keepaway against an opponent trying to rush me down with Cyborg Ninja or Raiden. I want to see Otacon using all manner of gadgetry to frustrate opponents, and Naked Snake using a “magazine” to “distract” the other player, creating an opening to put in some hurt with his Close Quarters Combat skills.
I also want to play a decent Castlevania fighting game. There was Castlevania Judgement on Wii a few years back, but it was pretty terrible by all accounts; I just want a regular 2D or 2.5D fighting game with Alucard, Soma Cruz, Simon Belmont, Shanoa, and Dracula all trading blows.
So why not combine both these wishes? Konami Deathmatch would be an in-house fighting game, like Capcom Fighting Jam or Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. These means that, not only would we get to see Raiden clashing swords with Alucard and Soma Cruz trading bullets with Revolver Ocelot, we also get to bring other marquee Konami characters into the fray. A fighting game with Pyramid Head and the Mystical Ninja Goemon in it? Where do I sign?
How likely is it?
An in-house crossover game bringing together character from different franchises under the same developer is always more possible than cross-developer games, and Konami have shown an interest in fighting games before, with Castlevania Judgement and Solid Snake’s appearance in Super Smash Bros.
I’m going to take a break from the versus fighting game theme for a moment, because that’s not the only way to do a crossover game. Games like Project X Zone have shown that crossover RPGs can work really well; and since we’re daydreaming here and not restricted by licensing issues or cost pressures, why not go right for the big guys?
The Persona x Final Fantasy game that I see basically plays like the Persona games; you have a party of sword-wielding heroes who can also summon strange and fantastic demons from within their psyche to aid them in battle.
Only this time, among the characters are well known Final Fantasy heroes like Cloud Strife and Terra Branford, and the demons that can be summoned include classic Final Fantasy monsters like Cactuars and Tonberries and summons / Espers / Aeons / Eidolons / whatever you want to call them like Bahamut and Ifrit.
Of course, the Persona mainstays like Jack Frost and Jiraiya will be present as well, and cross-franchise demon fusion will make for some interesting concoctions…
How likely is it?
I like to think this is pretty likely. Square Enix seems happy to slap the Final Fantasy brand on any old game these days, and Atlus have shown an openness to crossover games with the announcement of Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem.
The Last of Us and Uncharted share a lot of common elements: they’re both critically acclaimed action / adventure shooters from Naughty Dog. Beyond this, they’re very distinct games, completely different in tone and setting, each with their own unique stories and characters.
I want to blur these lines. More specifically, I want to assume that The Last of Us and Uncharted happen independently, but in the same universe. I want to play a game that follows Nathan Drake, Victor Sullivan, Chloe Fraser, and Elena Fisher as they try and deal with the outbreak of fungal zombies.
The way I see it, this game would be set prior to the events of The Last of Us, in the early days of the outbreak, with Drake and co chasing after some treasure or other amidst the the chaos of the zombie apocalypse. Of course, they would have their run-ins with Joel and Tess during their smuggler days, and a strange blend of Uncharted hilarity and The Last of Us sombreness would follow. Could the cordyceps even be the product of one of Drake’s prior run-ins with the supernatural?
How likely is it?
Despite both franchises being owned by Naughty Dog, this seems pretty unlikely. Uncharted and the Last of Us are very, very different games, made by different teams within the studio. Blending the over-the-top fun of Uncharted with the tense sombreness of The Last of Us doesn’t seem like a move Naughty Dog would consider.
So, there’s my list, but there are literally thousands of other games to use as source material. What crossover games would you like to see?
