AT A GLANCE
| The Good: Everyone’s favourite game set in little old NZ is back. | "20 years down the track, is it still worth playing?" |
| The Bad: Will this be as good today as it was back in the day? | |
| The Ugly: Well, not ugly as such, but that’s one weird looking Kiwi! |
Many of our... not quite so young readers will be sure to have great memories of playing The New Zealand story at their local fish and chip shop or at home on one of the many consoles or home computers the game was ported to. While I guess you could call it a pretty much ‘bog standard’ platforming game, it was made with so much charm and style that you just couldn’t help but crack a smile each time you played it.
The original game saw you fluttering your way around New Zealand rescuing your Kiwi mates, and the DS version of the game will include all your favourite parts of the old game but should also include some fresh challenges, as each level will be ‘remixed’ to keep things interesting and improve the game. In fine DS tradition, there will also be a host of mini games to keep you busy if you need a break from the main game.
Of course, no re-released classic game is complete without a graphical makeover! With a game like The New Zealand Story, the artists had to be careful to keep the style of the game that everyone loves, and from the looks of it they have succeeded. Everything looks amazingly detailed and keeps to the style we all love. Cute characters, bright graphics and the odd Maori carving in the tile sets: it all really does look fantastic.
If you’re a fan of the original, or a fan of cute platforming antics in general, then this could well be a welcome addition to your DS collection.
