AT A GLANCE

The Good: Improvements across the board. "Pro Evolution Soccer 6 will challenge FIFA 06 for the full 90."
The Bad: Still lacking some official licenses, which looks unprofessional.
The Ugly: A head-butt to the chest.

For those of you inspired by the World Cup this year to trade the rugby ball for something a little more spherical, and yet still sadly lacking the actual skills on the field: there is hope, in the form of Pro Evolution Soccer 6.

The latest in the Pro Evolution Soccer series will be shipping out on the 3rd of November for the Xbox 360 and the PS2, and in the week following for the PSP and PC. A Nintendo DS version is expected to follow in December.

Much is being made of the AI, which should be stronger both on offence and defence. And Pro Evolution Soccer 6 will, obviously, be a better-looking game than its predecessors – especially on the 360. You can expect more realistic movements from your players, and more distinction between players: attention to detail being the name of the game here.

However, talking of details, it is very unfortunate that the game still lacks official licensing from all the teams featuring. Konami have stressed that PES 6 has more licenses than previous titles in the series, but players will still have to, for example, take control of ‘London FC’ rather than Chelsea. It may not be a huge deal, but it is this kind of thing which gives sports titles that professional gloss.

Nevertheless, we are looking at a much improved game of football here, and hopefully a fair rival for FIFA 07.
