Nearing the end of the year it can be fun to sit back and think about the games that 2016 has brought us. And with NZGamer staff putting up their top 5 lists it would be fun for the community to do the same, as such here is my Top 5 for 2016.
It is worth noting I haven’t played Gears of War 4, Doom or Final Fantasy 15 yet, but they are glaring at me from my backlog so they may have made the cut had I played them, but I haven’t yet so they are out on a technicality.
5: No Mans Sky
Full of drama at release, and plenty of it deserved, No Man’s Sky made all the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Which is unfortunate because when you take No Man’s Sky for what it is its an exceptional, relaxing, time wasting joy. Exploring huge planets, then deciding its time to move on to another planet to start again. So many hours joyfully lost in a treasure that was underappreciated due to some craziness said in interviews.
4: Forza Horizon 3
While this game has been regularly regarded as not as good as its predecessor, it’s still an exceptional racing game. I have sunk far more hours into Forza Horizon 3 than most other games this year including No Man’s Sky, though to be fair that was assisted by my boy pointing at my gaming TV and saying cars until we could cuddle and play more Forza. He just wouldn’t let me stop enjoying this game.
3: Batman Arkham VR
Batman Arkham VR is very short, but in that couple of hours of playing you will experience one of the greatest VR experiences available (assuming you’re a nerd who likes Batman). The small sections of world the game built is exceptionally detailed and thought out, and looking around the Batcave still makes me tingle a bit, and my partner still laughs out how high I jumped at a certain point near the end.
2: Uncharted 4
Uncharted 4 is a little more divisive than the first 3 games were, but most who played to the end and experienced the game as a whole had to walk away impressed. Some pacing issues and the grappling hook physics aside it is one of my favourite games, with a fantastic ending that really round out Nathan Drakes story in a satisfying way. Oh and it looks absolutely gorgeous.
1: Ratchet and Clank
Remasters are things I would never put in a list like this, but Ratchet and Clank isn’t one. It’s a remake that includes elements from the original, has whole new levels, a significantly improved story, significantly improved controls and just an exceptional game. Ratchet and Clank is its own game, perfect for new comer to the series and old farts like me that want old and new at the same time. Hands down the best game I have played this year.
