The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
Published Friday 18 Sep 2009 6:00pm | Xbox 360The Chronicles was developed by Starbreeze and Tigon studios, and is a first person stealth shooter, focusing on hand-to-hand stealth kills instead of Rambo guns blazing.
FPS stealths are by no means new, but they are fairly rare. Mainly due to players taking it upon themselves to be stealthy or not. E.g. stealthing around in Bioshock is a handy tactic, but it's not a core aspect of the game.
Chronicles is actually two Riddick games, Butcher Bay and Dark Athena. Butcher Bay is originally an Xbox original release. And if your wondering why Chronicles has both games, it's because Dark Athena is more like a hefty expansion pack and this alone would not justify a top title shelf price.
Without the Riddick license, the game can stand upon it's own merit. And as a package, both games are well rounded, heavily stylised in the Riddick industrial (almost steam punk) world. Looking only slightly deeper exposes what can either be described as justifiable yet personal annoyances.
What was the name of the first film to feature Riddick?
Pitch Black right? because he has `eyeshine` that helps him see in the dark. So if you have a stealth game ft. Riddick, one would be guilty of thinking that hiding in the shadows, jumping out for stealth kills then hiding again would be like taking candy from a baby.
No.
A Riddick game where he can't see in the dark.
Honestly, I really can't see the point in continuing....
...that's so stupid, it's like making Rock Band Beatles without Lennon. It's ridiculous. Dark Athena goes somewhat to healing the issue with a light blurring mechanism that does look impressive, but actually blinds you in certain areas particularly when your fighting.
Other niggles include forgettable NPCs, really bad lighting in Butcher Bay, and a difficulty curb the size of Mt.Everest . I would liken the game to an improved and stylised F.E.A.R. but without the boring gameplay. It puts the `meh` in "this game is very boring....meh"
