Skate It

6/10

Skating is something very close to my heart, and I've been a fan of the Tony Hawks series of games (until they got boring), Skate, and Skate It on the DS. Thrasher on the PS1 however, sucked.

Published by EA and made by a collaboration of a few developers, "Skate It" takes the original "Skate" and updates the map and story. EARTHQUAKE! That explains both of those.

The first thing you notice is the polish. It looks fantastic for a Wii game. It has voice over work by one Giovanni Reda (professional photographer and Berrics contributor) who carries on the facade of his on-screen self, and expect cameos from every famous skateboarder of the past 5 years.

My personal issues were the controls; again, the game suffers in the most basic way a game can fail. The remote is just too inaccurate to execute the exact trick at the most pivotal time. In fairness, I managed to pull off 4 Nollie Inward Heels in a row... but I was going for the tre-flip. N/B it has balance board capability that might ease controller issues.
My other problem was the culture. I don't like the "alternative" guttermouth trash talk crap that gets sold with the game. I find it an insulting stereotype that's akin to putting massive tits on chick characters (DOA, DMC4, any Capcom game) for sex sales. Not all gamers buy titles for tits (tit-les, snap! pun). Rodney Mullen (34 time competition winner) doesn't talk like a trauma patient.
And the soundtrack is sh*t.

So rent it, buy it, mute it, and get ready for some arm-ache and controller rage because this is the only Wii skate simulator. I prefer the DS version despite it's shoddy graphics and 4 song soundtrack, it scores big on the controls and ease of use.
