(Not So) Super Street Fighter IV

Capcom is releasing a new Street Fighter game and that’s just great isn’t it? No. It isn’t. In 2010 it is absolutely not cool in any small way for Capcom to be treating us like it’s last generation and we live in a world where we have no broadband, consoles can barely go online, hard disk storage isn’t common and paying over 50% of full price for an update that doesn’t even add 50% more content is acceptable.

What the…?

There’s 10 New Characters (of which only 2 are actually ‘new’) as well as a new costume set for each character, extra play stages to accompany the characters and a few new game modes thrown in. Oh did I forget the extra Ultra Combos? Sorry but that just doesn’t sell it for me. Maybe that’s why it slipped my mind.

Super Street Fighter IV is NOT a new game and should NOT be sold as such. This is the equivalent to Rockstar Games releasing The Lost and the Damned and making you buy it again, along with GTAIV for 60% of the price of a new game. Wow bargain you might say if you didn’t originally buy GTAIV but what about those who did? The only people who profit from a model like this are the Developer/Publisher and those who didn’t buy the original game. So what does that say to those who were supported the game from the beginning? Thanks for the support and the money but hey do you mind just bending over there for a minute?

Call me bitter but seriously no one should be taking this practice in the current state of gaming. Sure this is a bit different to the episodic content in GTA4 because it couldn’t be stand-alone but to make me BUY THE GAME AGAIN when it could have been DLC is inexcusable. We know that T Hawk and Dee Jay were completed by release of SFIV and we know that 6 of the others only had to be recreated in 3D, so for two completely new characters, some extra game modes and new combos I’m just not seeing the value here. We aren’t playing games in an arcade here. We are buying the product for our home so why should we suffer this out dated ‘update’ model.

The bottom line is that this game should have been DLC and it’s insulting that it isn’t. To not take advantage of a viable new model that is on its way to being well established seems greedy and irresponsible from a big player like Capcom who you would expect to be a leader in new distribution methods. I guess it comes down to the fact that it’s easy to exploit the hard-core fan base that Street Fighter holds but really how long can it hold up when companies pull sh*t like this. There’s a whole upcoming generation of gamers out there where loyalty and nostalgia is not a factor and if this kind of greed and laziness continues it’s only going to hurt the industry and most importantly the gamers.

But, but, but...Ryu has an awesome Shoryuken?!

In all seriousness though, you are right and it pisses me off too. We currently live in a world of sequels; both for games and movies.
Companies exploit their fanbase for extra cash at the expense of quality games. I can agree that they are a business and that of course is the point of a business: Make more money...but still, it's crap.

I honestly hope it hits breaking point eventually and people just give up on getting sequels that match the original...but its a feeble hope and it will not happen while this world is filled with mindless drones screaming: "ZOMG TRANSFORMERS 2 WAS THE BEST MOVIE EVER!"

And that's me spent.

So I gather you weren't around for Super Street Fighter II - The New Challengers and Super Street Fighter II Turbo?

Capcom have done this for years and it's no worse than Activision. If they can make a dollar off a franchise, hats off to them.

Yes, we as the consumer are the one's exploited, but if we weren't bending over backwards and accepting it then we wouldn't see new IP's coming out of the profit of some rehashed game code.

Unfortunately or fortunately, I'm one of the bunch who didn't buy the first iteration, so I'm actually excited for this version. Yes, early adopters are getting royally reamed, but for those who haven't bought it like me, it's another reason to invest in this "update".

And BAZINGHA.

Capcom have been pretty damn fail this generation. In the 32-bit era, they were pretty much #1 in my heart after Sega (at least until I got an N64), and I still felt strong feelings for them in the short life of the Dreamcast. But boy, have they ever got this generation wrong. From their policies on DLC to the fact that you can count on one hand the number of games they have released that are worth playing, Capcom have just been fail all round to me.

I don't know, I just checked MightyApe and SSFIV is going for only $10 more than SFIV. That sounds pretty reasonable to me.

10 extra characters, extra stages, extra online game modes, selectable ultra combos and new skins for existing charcters. Sounds pretty good to me.

I know you're playing down 8 of the 10 additional characters because they aren't new to the franchise as a whole, but it still takes alot of work and resources to incorporate all of these characters into the game.

So you're going to get burned... singed(it's only 80 bucks) for being an early adopter, just remember, no-one's making you buy this game.

A valid point, but this is hardly the first example of... well, this.

And here's my advice if you want a good fighting game - to hell with SF4 and overpriced MadCatz Fightpad (both of which I have, and both of which are a disappointment), and get a DS and Bleach: Dark Souls. BEST FIGHTING GAME EVER, BY A MILE. I make no apologies for the caps.

Yes, it's only $10 more, but if you already own SFIV you're paying a lot more than $10 for what could easily be DLC. Shame on you Capcom :/

SFIV was $150 when it first came out around March with Resident Evil 5. It's a bit much to ask for $90 more for 10 characters. Apparently CAPCOM is giving original owners something for owning both.
If you don't like, don't buy it like with the outragous DLC cost of costumes or multiplayer for RE5

But Street Fighter 1 came out the same year as Final Fantasy 1.

I'd rather play the OG. Not a fan of the blocky SFIV animation, some characters look shyt.

Blocky animation? Wat? What are you comparing it to, exactly? The animation is infinitely superior to anything ever achieved with sprites, an accolade the original street fighters never even came near anyway. I've been playing street fighter for 18 years and i have _no idea_ what you're talking about.

I am jumping on your bandwagon for an entirely different reason. When I brought this game, I was led to believe from the trailers that there would be up to 3 alternate costumes for each character... At no stage did they give me the indication that I would have to pay $7.90 for packs of 5, including the packs from the previous SF4.

You can't put things in a teasear trailer for a game if they don't come out of the box. It's not a feature of the game if you have to pay additional for it.

I don't recall seeing an advertisement for a car, where on purchase, you are informed that if you want it to have doors and windows you need to pay extra.

Good. For me, Super was the first one I played, so in that regard i'm happy I didn't pay up front.

It's going to be the same with Avatar the movie, it'll be re released with new scenes in a few months so why buy the dvd now..

Well everybody opinion counts, but I fell different to what you are saying. Every Street Fighter video game, beside the original, had receive massive updates within the year that they have been released. You might have been born in the late 90's but I remember when original game was released at the arcade.

Hey I agree! While we're on the subject of minimal updates, let's talk about those naughty folks who live at EA sports HQ - Grrrr... "Don't make me angry, you won't like me when I'm angry" Hang on.. that's another thing that has been "rebooted" repeatedly with minimal effort. Grrrr... Goddamn! Now I'm MAD!
