The Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification today officially banned the sale, hire, advertisement and exhibition of the highly controversial Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. This news comes after the ongoing buzz that the ?Hot Coffee? modification has made. According to the AOFLC the ?Hot Coffee? mod unlocks mini-games which contain ?contentious material? that invalidated the game's original M15+ rating.
Due to the fact that the AOFLC have no R18+ or AO rating for games in Australia, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has been deemed ?banned?. "Businesses that sell or hire computer games should remove existing stocks of this game from their shelves immediately," said the Director of the classification board Des Clark. "Parents are strongly advised to exercise caution in allowing children continued access to the game, particularly if they might have access to the 'Hot Coffee' modification."
With such a focus on this game at the moment, it will be interesting to see how it is rated when Rockstar?s edited version is produced (with the hot coffee scenes removed). There are rumours that the game may not make it past Australian censors a second time after such controversy.
