Rumour: Vita Exploit Found

The security methodologies employed by Sony's PlayStation Vita handheld have been defeated, according to a post on homebrew enthusiast site wololo.net.

The site claims that known hacker Yifan Lu has discovered an exploit in the Vita that allows custom code to execute, potentially opening the door to unapproved software ("homebrew") on the device.

Lu's previous work has included exposing the Amazon Kindle and converting PlayStation games to work on the Xperia Play smartphone. It's unclear if his latest discovery will result in wholesale piracy of Vita software, however it seems reasonably likely that Sony will be unhappy about it either way.

As sure as the sun will rise this was bound to happen, my only surprise is that its taken this long. Sony must've done a pretty tight security job on the Vita.

But less games will be sold alongside those consoles, so they may make either more or less than they currently are.

Well that's pretty sad. Hopefully this doesnt affect sales to the extent it did on the psp.

They tend to make money from the games rather than the consoles though don't they?

It's kind of sad that this happens, but I don't really see a way to stop it.

On one side I'm happy, because some of the homebrew for PSP was pretty good, but on the other side this will probably doom the Vita

I wouldn't go as far as to say it will doom it, but it definitely won't help. Is the Vita really doing all that well anyway?

Nah its definitely on the same rut as the PSP; superior hardware, but lack of good games and doesn't have the same for-kids look the DS/3DS has.

I think Sony charge a $10 licensing fee for developers to put something on their consoles. But yeah consoles they generally lose money with the expectations they will make it up with the games.
