At the 25th Anniversary celebrations for the Metal Gear franchise last night, Kojima Productions and Konami announced Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, a new and apparently open-world entry in the fan-favorite series.

The game is targeted at PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, however Kojima Productions made specific reference to next generation systems, stating that their "Fox" engine was capable of making next-gen games.

Some "key art" for the game, as released by Konami at the event

Ground Zeroes was described by Gamespot as showing possible open-world elements. "The military base itself felt expansive and huge," Gamespot explained, "Snake can summon a helicopter to bring him around as well as drive a jeep to go from point A to B."

Hideo Kojima, creator of the franchise, stated that he's keen to bring a new "spin" to the stealth genre, adding that, should you be discovered and your stealth broken, you can use "all the means and tools to escape", rather than facing a "game over" screen.

Specific details as to the breadth and scope of the game, as well as the targeted release date, were not included as part of this announcement.

Very pleased to hear this news, I wonder where in the MGS time-line this will fit in?

Of all the developers in the world I trust Kojima the most to deliver something of the utmost quality that will differentiate itself from the crowd.

It does look stunning in action, that video is incredible. I wonder though, is it going to be for next gen systems? It almost looks too good to be released on anything this generation, bar high end PC's maybe

They've said it's for PS3 and 360. It looks cool, but not next-gen IMO. Nothing I've seen of it looks beyond the capabilities of the PS3 / 360.

Really, if that's current gen why would we need anything better !?!? Sony & Xbox are gonna have to deliver something truly mind-blowing to convince consumers en mass they need to upgrade to better hardware. Though admittedly we did only see about a minute of real-time gameplay.

Check out the Star Wars 1313 videos; that's a game that, to me at least, looks impossible on current hardware. I reckon that's the first next-gen game we've seen.

Otherwise, if you look at a modern game on a tricked out PC, you'll notice a big difference compared to what's possible on today's aging consoles. People are running Dark Souls, for example, at huge resolutions (over 5x 1080p) and then using clever tricks to downsample, etc, to ensure it looks amazing at the correct resolution for their monitors. This stuff is waaaay beyond what a current console can do.

When consoles get that kind of power, you'll see even more amazing things, as developers really squeeze everything possible out of them.

Imagine GTA that looked like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWpiGYnyCPo

That was done on PC a year ago.

^ Yes the Star Wars 1313 does look to be taking things to the next level in the graphic department. There's still not the obiously huge difference we saw in PC games vs. PS2/Xbox/GC we saw at the end of the last gen yet though.

2013 will be a interesting year, when I'm sure we will start to see footage of confirmed Next Gen games and very possibly even the end of year release of some "true" Next Gen consoles. Ah :) the future is an exciting thing!!

I love this part of the gen myself; current games are really pushing the systems we already own very hard. I've recently seen some upcoming games that are great examples of exactly that, and should impress a great deal when they come out later this year / next year.

And then there's the expectation, rumours, speculation, and general looking forward to what's next! I can't wait to see it :D
