Version 1.8 of the PlayStation Vita firmware, as previously announced, enables the playback of PlayStation 1 games on the system for the first time.

The firmware is out now (a 102MB download), and - in our region at least - allows Vita owners to play 128 of the previously released titles, with more to be added over time.

Vita owners in the USA, on the other hand, have access to just nine titles, according to the latest post on the PlayStation Blog (US).

They are there; but you have to download them with a PS3. Presumably that will change later this week, but no details around that have been provided.

I just checked and they're now available for download directly from the PSN store onto the Vita. Now to decide which of my PS1 games I want to play first.

A first-world problem to be sure! I elected to go with the original Crash Bandicoot. Man I miss those games.
