Sony have made a number of announcements regarding the PlayStation Plus (PS+) subscription service at Gamescom in Germany this morning.

Specifically, the details unveiled today:

  • Red Dead Redemption will be the free game available to all PlayStation Plus subscribers in the SCEE region (including New Zealand) for the month of September. Once you download it, the game is yours to keep until your PS+ membership expires.
  • PlayStation Plus is coming to PlayStation Vita later this year and is included in the existing subscription fee; no further details were announced.
  • The Cloud Storage component of the PlayStation Plus membership has been increased from 150MB to 1GB
  • New members will receive a 25% discount when signing up

PS+ just keeps getting better and better. the 1GB cloud upgrade is much needed, have had to be very selective with which of my precious saves have been uploaded!!

The only downside to all this is I have become very wary of buying anything from the PSN Store(I'm looking at you Shadow of Collosus HD/Ico) in-case its released as a freebie a few months later!!!

I felt the same for a while about buying games with the free Plus offerings but if I find a good deal I'll still buy it. There's a lot of PS3 games now and in comparison not a lot offered for free, so the chances of buying a game and having it given for free soon after aren't that high. Also the games tend to be at least a couple of years old and cheap enough to buy in sales now anyway.

I completely agree about the cloud save upgrade. It'll be nice not to have to be so picky about what to put on there.

I think sony (and any company for that matter) tends to prefer a steady source of revenue (like yearly ps+ subscriptions) over one-off game purchases. To my understanding, this is where MS get the majority of revenue from - xbox gold.

The reduction in price for ps+ for newcomers is a good idea. The biggest problem with ps+ is getting people to try it. Once people try it, they are likely to keep it going as they will get few games they will want to play and not want to let go. But getting over that "rented games" perception with newbies is the key. Great games like RDR certainly help.
