Bohemia Interactive have announced that a standalone version of the popular Arma II mod, DayZ, is in development. Kiwi Dean "Rocket" Hall, the creator of the original mod, is the project lead on the new game, and will speak about it in person at Gamescom next week.
"This is the fairy-tale outcome for a mod that many would have said impossible four months ago," Dean stated on the DayZ Tumblr page.

The development will be non-traditional in structure, but those familiar with the Indie development scene will no doubt recognize the model being employed. Additionally, the mod itself will continue to iteratively improve, even while the new game is being built.
"Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so," Dean explained. "The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price."
The new game has its own website (separate to the mod), and Dean promises that many of the questions that today's announcement creates will be answered soon. DayZ, when it arrives, will continue to be PC exclusive.
