The organizers of Auckmageddon have announced this afternoon that their next event, A7, will feature a world first standalone tournament instance of the popular DayZ mod for Arma II. This will allow players at the LAN to compete in the mod on even-footing with other attendees, without putting their existing characters at risk or having any sort of advantage over other players.
The way the contest will work, while still a little light on detail, is explained on the A7 website:
We'll be collecting stats such as:
- Longest Character Life
- Most Zombies Killed
- Most Bandits Killed
- Least Blood Lost
- and more
Which we'll assign arbitrary points to, tally up particular combinations of stats, and then give prizes to those that we feel survived the zombie infestation the best.
You can find out more about the tournament, and sign up for it if you're so inclined, here. A7 itself, a LAN for 400 gamers run at North Harbour Stadium, kicks off on August 3rd. Pre-payments for the event close on July 23rd.
DayZ is a mod for Arma II, developed by ex-Wellingtonian Dean Hall, in which your goal is to survive the zombie apocalypse for as long as possible. It's hard, and it's packed full of hardcore survivor bandits who'll kill you first then say "Hi" afterwards. Many consider it to be the "CounterStrike" of Arma II, so significant has its impact been on that game's sales (Arma II frequently features at the very top of Steam's sales charts, eclipsing massive, mega-budget games in the process).
