GAME Over in Australia

Receivers PriceWaterhouseCoopers have confirmed that all 31 retail GAME stores in Australia will be closing down over the next few weeks.

"In the interests of creditors, the 31 remaining Game stores are to be closed over the coming weeks and a final closing down sale has commenced with discounts of up to 60 per cent available in-store and online," administrator Kate Warwick said in a statement to GameSpot.

Sixteen of the stores have closed already, with the remaining fifteen to close soon.

"This is a difficult time for employees, and closing the stores was not a decision we made easily. Despite exploring available opportunities for continued trading, the ongoing trading performance and absence of viable offers for the purchase of the business has resulted in these closures."

I wonder what this is due to. Is it from EB's takeover of the retail gaming market?

I suspect it's a combination of tight retail margins and the increasing sales share of digital downloads. Running a retail store has got to be pretty challenging in this economy, as there are LOTS of overheads to such an endeavor that simply don't exist when you only sell online.

I've seen a few comments around the net saying "thank god, I hope EB is next" etc. I wonder if these people realise that these closures mean a heap of people made redundant/out of work, which sucks (because I know that feel).

Oh man i hope stores like EB and that remain open, its sad people are getting laid off. But also the bigger electronic stores normally overprice games (Harvey Norman) and dont neccessarily have the best stock either

Internet sales have seriously affected retail stores like this =(

When you compared game store prices (e.g. EB's) to an online store like Mighty Ape, it's pretty obvious which one you're gonna go for. Even taking into account sales and trade-in credit, online seems to always come out on top.

"Physical" shops or whatever you wanna call them need to find a way to act as legitimate competition for online stores, but it may be hard in years to come seeing as the gaming industry seems to push digital copies themselves, as more and more complete games are being released on the PSN etc at the same time as the physical retail release.

This is a little distressing to me because I prefer having an actual solid/physical copy of something, as opposed to some file floating around in the ether :(

It's sad to see anybody out of a job and I do like browsing stores for bargains but that's the problem. If they're anything like EB the bargains will be few and far between?! EB often sell USED games weeks or months after release for over $100 when elsewhere (online) you get NEW games shipped day 1 for around $75-85. And if you do wait weeks/months you get them (new) for $30-$50.

GAME tended to have the same model as EB, their games were always way more than they should be, even pre-owned.

I'm not really surprised that they are shutting down, neither the local store or the one in the city ever had many customers in them here in Perth.

Personally, I couldn't care less about a games retailer in Australia. Nor could i care if EB closed it's doors truth be told, online retailers (mightyape, nzgameshop etc.) are alot cheaper and deliver a great service, I don't get why people even bother with retail stores anymore.

For me at the moment with physical stores it's either just during sales or for CE's that are say, exclusive to EB with contents I really want. A lot of the time I buy online because I play a lot of JRPGs and physical stores don't stock half the titles I want (at least in NZ).

For this specifically, I agree that it sucks so many people will lose their jobs. It'd be nice if physical stores could find a way to stay around and co-exist with online.
