Blizzard's latest game, Diablo III, has set a new record for the fastest selling PC game, selling 3.5 Million copies during its first 24 hours on sale. This number doesn't include World of Warcraft subscribers who got a free copy of Diablo III by signing up for the Annual Pass program, meaning that some 4.7 Million gamers had access to the game day one.
"We're definitely thrilled that so many people around the world were excited to pick up their copy of Diablo III and jump in the moment it went live," said CEO Mike Morhaime.
The success of the title at retail was mitigated, however, by widely reported problems with server stability, connection issues, and lag. Backlash surrounding these issues has been both vocal and sustained (particularly on Blizzard's own forums), and today's announcement didn't ignore that feedback.
"We also regret that our preparations were not enough to ensure everyone had a seamless experience when they did so. I want to reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo III players out there have a great experience with the game moving forward, and I also want to thank them for their ongoing support."
Diablo III is available now; our review is also up, which you can read here. Are you playing the game? Have you experienced any issues since it was released last week? If so, are you overly concerned about them? Let us know in the comments.
