EA Switch Off Free Servers for Battlefield 3

Just a month after the launch of the in-game rent-a-server program for Battlefield 3, EA have switched off the official servers for the game according to a report on VentureBeat.

While it is still possible to play the game online, players will need to choose from the random assortment of rule sets on offer on the various servers that players have set up and are paying for themselves.

Questioned as part of an "Ask Me Anything (AMA)" thread on Reddit, DICE community manager Daniel Matros confirmed the move, stating "There is only so much physical space and digital space where you can have servers. The community requested [a rental program] and we delivered.”

The worst thing about what they have done is "surprise" their entire customer base with making only servers that are user pay available. I'm not aware of any other FPS title that does this.

At least Activision provided customers with advance warning and information about their "Elite" offering, which still remains optional.

Personally, this makes me question the value of pre-ordering or purchasing any EA titles (like Crysis 3) for at least the near future as who knows what they will change after their release.

Im frankly very surprised... and glad I dont do much MP. I understand that EA cant keep the servers going for ever but really you except them to keep the servers alive AT LEAST FOR A YEAR!!!! Come on.Its only been half a year since release and BF3 is still selling great and even though they are making buckets of money they come out with this. Compare this to the developers of Demon's Souls who kept the servers alive for 3 years (i think) to serve a much much smaller player base (DS only sold 1.5M approx, BF3 has 15M shifted).

WTF?! next thing you know they'll suddenly pull all their servers and make it p2p only like CoD. Even the Killzone 1 servers stayed up for 3-5 years and that was on PS2.

LOL!!!!!! Since when has cod been P2P??? i think somebody doesnt understand what ELITE is... Activision would never pull a stunt like this they know better than that! But i now see why EA was voted worst company in america... epic fail ea

.... Im lost on the P2P thing on COD?
On PS3.. it feels P2P? There is always a host that the game depends on... Having Elite did not change this.

The rent a server was a mixed blessing, more variety in game options and some fun map rotations. But it was getting hard to find standard games.
What worries me is it would be easy for people or clans to lock up their servers and ask for $$$ to play on it. And when the players willing to pay for servers move on or get sick of paying for them the game will die a lot quicker.
Online pass codes, Rent a server, MP unlock short cuts, $30 DLC (better than cod's DLC but $30 is pricey) Ea truly are a nasty company after the dollars at any cost. At least they allow their developers to enhance their games and not force them into an copy and paste cycle like Activision I suppose.

battlefield fanboy much? ur $30 DLC (better than cod's DLC but $30 is pricey) comment makes me laugh.. $30 is pricey??? thats the norm for a map pack i suggest you get used to it, and what makes battlefields dlc better? So far it has been some old maps, afew costumes and OHH GOODY SOME DOGTAGS. Also ur copy/paste comment about the CoD series is pathetic! wtf do u think ea is doing? has battlefield changed their game since battlefield bad company 2?? NO! just made afew changes and a battlefield clone (medal of honour) and hoped that the fans would enjoy it.. Dont get my wrong i enjoy both series but there is a reason CoD took all the awards at the VGA"S and they do it without talking crap about battlefield/ea wish i could say the same for ea.....
