Activision have announced the release today of Battleship, the game based on the movie of the same name, which itself is based on the classic board game.

“Working with the legendary Battleship property, and the new epic action-adventure from Universal Pictures, we felt it was important to capture some of the cinematic drama while allowing players to experience the action from a unique perspective,” said David Oxford, Activision Publishing. “We want both movie-goers and gamers of all ages to dive into an all new, fun Battleship experience.”

The title, released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, is a first-person shooter with "tactical battle command" elements. Players must fight the alien incursion on land, as well as direct the titular battleships as they take it to the enemy at sea. There are also versions available for Nintendo Wii, DS, and 3DS.

The movie, meanwhile, opened in NZ cinemas last week.
