Silicon Knights, the Canadian developer behind Too Human and Eternal Darkness (among others), has laid off 43 staff - leaving 43 people manning the fort.
This news comes on the back of disappointing reviews for their most recent title, X-Men Destiny. The game has a metacritic rating of between 38 and 52 percent, depending on the platform.
Speaking to Kotaku, an unnamed developer stated that "Last week Silicon Knights experienced layoffs due to extended contract negotiations falling through with a potential partner".
As if to allay concerns about the future of the company (and interest as to just what happened to the Canadian Government grant they recently received), he also said "We are currently in discussions with other potential partners. The recent Ontario government funding is tied to future performance targets, spread out over the next 5 years, which we will meet."
Most intriguingly, and perhaps most likely to pique attention around these parts, is the veiled suggestion that "The company is currently refocusing and returning to its roots, working on one of its most requested titles for the next generation".
Much as we liked Too Human, we can only imagine their most-requested title would have to be a return to the world of Eternal Darkness.
