Nintendo announced more details on the 3DS circle pad expansion during yesterday's 3DS event, including titles that will utilize it.

The new circle pad will be about the same size as the 3DS original, unlike the smaller one in famitsu's leaked image. In addition, the unit adds a new shoulder button to the right side - where it would cover the exsisting button, and new triggers to both sides.

Games currently confirmed to support the slide pad include Monster Hunter 3 G, Resident Evil Revelations, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D, Ace Combat 3D Cross Rumble, Shin Sangoku Musou VS, and Kingdom Hearts 3D.

A second circle pad is ideal for first person shooters and changing the camera angle in third person titles.

The unit will cost 1,500 yen (NZD$24.00), so if it isn't region locked importing could cost around $35 (including postage).

I'm not sure how I feel about this. It kind of makes the unit look even bulkier than it is, though the new control scheme is going to be advantageous for upcoming releases.

I'll wait to see what the updated hardware in future looks like.

This thing is just crazy!? How long till they bring out a revised 3DS with this integrated? They've segregated the market and the sooner they sort it the better for everyone. What a mess

15,000 yen is NOT 24NZD
Take one of those 0's off the end there fellas.

Gawd damn that is an ugly piece of hard ware.
Im enjoying my new 3DS quite a lot atm, and aslong as those big titles don't require it for gameplay, then it doesn't bother me too much.

Yeah, I imagine a lot of potential buyers will now wait for the expected revision with the second stick built in.

Who would be crazy enough to buy the 3DS in it's current state?

I'm a relatively recent adopter of 3DS, but after this gesture by Nintendo, I predict it will become a trade-in for a Vita. Nintendo really put themselves between a turd and a sh*tty place with this one, didn't they? Without the 2nd stick the console is supposedly backward, and if they add it then they piss off everyone who already has a 3DS. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. It'll take more than some free retro games to fix this c*ck-up. Apparently the Nintendo shareholders are seriously f**ked off too.

Agree. Those who adopted early will feel like they are being punished - after the price drop having to buy an add-on sucks. I reckon nintendo should give this pad out free to those who already have a 3DS - while this will probably cost millions, it get them some goodwill from loyal fans.

I've read somewhere that the circle pad requires separate AA batteries - can you guys confirm this?

Doh!! And people expected the thing to incorporate its own battery and extend the 3DS's crappy battery life, but NO it requires an *additional* battery!? epic fail methinks :(
