PlayStation Store's PS1 classics and Neogeo range have been a nice distraction between the latest releases. Now rumours have surfaced that Sony is gearing up a new service that will bring back PlayStation 2 classics (Bouncer anyone?) on the PlayStation Portable - strangely enough, there's no word on whether the PlayStation 3 will run them.
According to the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine UK (via CVG), Sony is planning to launch the service soon. The idea of downloading DVD size games brings up an obvious dilemma - they are DVD size and will take substantially more time and bandwidth than a CD rom based PlayStation 1 title. It's also generally accepted that the PSP is less powerful than the PS2, making direct emulation of PS2 titles on PSP a fantasy.
So what could this be? Stripped down, low resolution emulation? Magical hackery of the highest order? Or an early leak for what is actually an NGP service?
It's like that the big sellers such as Metal Gear Solid 2 and Final Fantasy X will make the short list of releases. If the rumour is true, just like PlayStation 1 classics, the digital downloads will probably be playable on NGP - we may even see titles that have seen HD remakes such as God of War return in their standard definition form.
Which PlayStation 2 titles would you like to grab off PlayStation Store?
